BF AUCTION: 1970 Dodge Challenger 360
This is the last of the three Challengers that were recently pulled out of a barn by Restore A Muscle Car and Gas Monkey Garage. It was parked two decades ago, but has since been recommissioned and is ready to enjoy. This is an exclusive Barn Finds Auction so be sure to check it and the other two Challengers out.
Boy, it sure cleaned up well! The paint is a custom black metal flake job that was done a long time ago. It looks decent in the photos. The numbers tell us it was originally dark burnt orange, but I’d probably just leave it and touch up and bad areas. Quality paint jobs are expensive these days.
The air cleaner says “340”, but it’s actually a 360 V8 with a four-barrel on top. It left the factory with a 318 so this is a nice upgrade and the seller claims that it’s fast and fun to drive. I’d probably tone things down by replacing the valve covers and radiator hose cover. Now we are just nitpicking.
The interior is decent, but that huge equalizer needs to go! Pull it off and replace the lower dash pad and things would look great in here. This may be the lesser of the three we are auctioning off, but it still came very well-optioned with a gauge package, rear spoiler, and more.
The triple black color combo is sinister! This is going to be the most affordable of the three Challengers, but that doesn’t make me like it any less. It appears to be solid and is lightyears ahead of the rusty Challenger projects we have featured lately. A 360 is not period correct.
True, it came out in 1971 and wasn’t offered in E-bodies. But 50 years later, who cares? I don’t. These cars aren’t being offered as Worman-quality restorations, although they are good starting points for one.
All three look like solid drivers, especially with A/C, auto trans, power steering and brakes. I’d hang a Lafayette HB-625 23 channel CB radio under the dash, a Hustler Power-Packer trunk-lip mount antenna on the trunk lid, and put my Carpenters collection on a boom box in the back seat and take my bride of 40 years for ice cream.
…and don’t forget to put the magnetic CB antenna whip on the trunk lid to tell the CB world you are ready to shout out to a “good buddy”.

Okay. I admit it, I was terrible with CB slang. Thank God the transmitting range of a CB radio was only a few miles; unlike this message…
10-20 was “where are you?” Mag mounts started to become popular later. It was almost fun to watch people put them on vinyl roofs like this car has because they didn’t stick well and fell off above 30 mph or so.
I’m pretty sure that the 360 was available in the ’74 Cuda and Challenger. IIRC, it replaced the 340 for that final build year.
Good call on the radiator hose “cover” I cannot understand why people put these on their cars, still, especially without the anodized hose clamp covers designed to look like AN fittings. They don’t look good, they look and scream “cheap”. A clean stock hose looks lightyears better.I was at a car show, some guy had these everywhere, even on the positive battery cable, fractions of an inch from the terminal. Rant over:-)
The fake braided covers were popular in the 80’s and 90’s, they’ve run their course. So has the chrome corrugated hoses that followed. Thankfully, black, pre-formed radiator hoses have made a comeback.

I like the color, nom engine (if non orig them add ponies) and wheels and spoiler.
I dislike the dash pad cover and car being born missing another pedal deformity.
The trans and rear gears ⚙️ would change.

Its a cute show to watch but i did check
out a little when they restored a mustang 67-68 and it was tapped in a wreck Hard in front and they wined totaled.. The shop builds cars ? Thats when i said hmm what would chips overhauling do in their reality show.
They would of did the TV impossible with the all nighter all hands on deck BS but fix fender and frame if-needed and paint to pull the rally monkey 🐒

The ’70 front end looks better with the [missing here] thin chrome upper trim. Dodge should have kept the’70 front & rear end thru ’74. Or at least thru ’72, & use the ’71 changes in ’73 & ’74.
Why an Aspen would sell in ’75 & not these is odd. Mpg would be no different – same motors! Maybe simply a big change in design sells, even if inferior? Whoever was stubborn not to buy a Chally or Barracuda in ’74, waiting for Aspen or Volare, sure got theirs. lol
I love the ’72-’74 Challenger front and rear. Sad mouth, catfish mouth, mean mouth, whatever….love ’em.
Sales results of these later models would beg to differ with you. No more shaker hoods or hemis or 440s or multlple carburetion or even ram air. I always thought the 2 opposing angles of the ’72-4 tailites were weird. & the tailites of the ’70 were among THE best of ANY car EVER.
I would NOT want to see a ’72 Chally as the star in “Vanishing Pt” – the original(if the movie was made a year later in ’72) or the remake!

Correct – the 360 was the go to motor for 73/74. BUT just have to ask why are these on Barn Finds auction…..what a world…what a world.
@stillrunners – With 5 million page views a month and a huge following of classic car enthusiasts, I’d say Barn Finds is the perfect place for this car.
Of the three I’d say this one is the strongest performer, I just get that sense about it. 340, 360, heck a bored and stroked plus 400 inches! Why not, this is a real driver here and not just the old ice cream runs or going twenty five and waving at everybody but real enthusiastic driving. Of the three featured here this is my favorite, triple black, worked motor, and lots of non original stuff.
If I bought this car, I’d restore the original color instead doing a touch up job here and there. QAULITY PAINT SHOP can be found if you look hard enough. In fact I know two in my “Hood”, they do quality work and their prices are reasonable. Let’s ee if I win the bid for this one.
