922 Mile 1987 Buick Grand National GNX
If you have ever seen the documentary “Black Air: The Buick Grand National Documentary” then you will know just how loved and coveted these cars can be. This 1987 Buick Grand National GNX is hitting the stratosphere in price with a current bid of $94,100. It has only 922.5 miles and is number 392 of 547. It is located in Jacksonville, Florida. You can read more about it here on eBay.
This low mile GNX is powered by the legendary 231 cubic inch, 3.8 liter, turbocharged V6, connected to the automatic transmission with Positraction in the rear. Not a single modification has been made to the car. It maintains its original paint and date coded tires. The car has been stored in a climate controlled environment. It makes sense that the listing states this car is collector quality.
The car is high optioned with many of them featured inside, including power door locks, power windows, and a power adjustable driver seat with six-way movement. Cruise control and a tilt wheel are on the dash as well as a concert sound stereo with a graphic equalizer. It also has a lighted mirror, remote side mirrors, power antenna, and a theft deterrent system.
These cars have always fascinated me and nowadays they are much harder to come by at a decent price than when I first became interested in them. I am glad I finally got to write about one and I think it might be the highest priced car I have written about. Everyone has their preferences and opinions, which makes the automotive hobby so fun and diverse. These cars will always have a soft spot in my book.

Remember, the GNX was the super high-performance version of the Grand National. The engine was gone through and the suspension was beefed up to turn it into the ultimate Buick! That is why the bidding is high on this one. Well, that and the low-mileage. I have love & hate: I love the fact someone has the checkbook to preserve this car as new, all these years. I hate the fact that they have the money to put it to sleep, in their private collection, were it will emerge again in this state. There is something wrong in all this.
$102,100 & hasn’t hit the reserve yet.
I hope someone even richer comes along and buys this, then has the balls to tear the plastic off it and drive it now and then. I’ll bet even the show dogs would have more fun rolling in the mud with the other mutts..
“ I’ll bet even the show dogs would have more fun rolling in the mud with the other mutts..” Well said, Bakyrdhero. Even better, put the dogs in the car and go for a ride! 👍🏻
If you rip the plastic off, that would destroy some of its premium value. Therefore, I would drive it once in a while with the plastic left on it.
Whether we like it or not, everything has a balance to it. For everything you get in this life, you have to give up something.
The question will always be “Is what you’re getting worth what you’re giving up?”
Are you willing to give up a lot of money for a conversation piece, do you want to enjoy it by driving it, or do you want an investment? Cars are very, very rarely an investment that pay back more than the overall cost-in money, that is..
What a shame that nobody ever enjoyed this car as its builders intended.
I hope somebody does rip all that plastic off and puts at least a few thousand miles on it…grinning ear to ear!
It is truly a shame to see this car in that state. To have it become a bragging right of some rich dude with inflated ego! That car was made to run Rip Off the plastic sit your rearend in the drivers seat AND DRIVE IT !!!
Hardly a investment. Interest was high back than and storage fee’s on top of that. I agree, drive the damn thing and enjoy it. Owned my Iroc Z for 26 years and it puts a smile on my face every time I turn the key…
NOT My cup of tea nor did i ever like or care for the car much less less a V6. I DON’T care if it was turbocharged or not!!
For the price the car is $elling for which in my NOT $o Humble opinion i$ RIDICULOU$!!! There are a LOT More unique older muscle cars or Corvettes that are V8 Powered i Would MUCH RATHER Purchase…
EACH TO THEIR OWN ;-)
I use to share your opinion until me, & my unbeaten(4 an 0) 1970 Sig Erson GMC 402 V-8 “farm truck” got the doors blown off by an old guy driving a shinny new looking GNX Buick back in 1990.
I was in my 78 Camaro . Do 110 mph . And pulled over by one of these guys . Said it took him 2 miles to catch me . Love the car . I would drive the hell out of it .
Here’s a link to the documentary, I’ll be watching it on my next movie night.

Thank you for posting that, I enjoyed it !
For good or bad,Buick started the “murdered out look” with the GNX.
Its at $105,100, Reserve not met… If you really must have one just go to Chevrolet of Dover in Delaware, they have one on the showroom floor:

:-)… and its #51!
It looks like they are battling each other for what I would guess is the most expensive GNX ever sold.
Buy it drive it and enjoy it,cars are made to be driven not put in mothballs
Boring…..
Barn find ????
922 miles? Geez, that’s a part car in the Buick GN universe isn’t it?
I wonder how many of these were put away, seems like there’s more very low mileage cars than high mileage cars. I really wonder the %.
I worked at a Buick/Cadillac dealership in the mid Eighties. We all liked looking at the T-Type and Grand National Regals when they came in. Then one day we got two GNX’s in. Seems all of us younger guys and the real car guys were gonna get fired for stopping what we were doing to look at them! The sales guys were drooling because they knew that they would be an easy sell. This car is cool because other than the road grime new cars get on them from being transported from the factory, this car is exactly how the dealer received it. I hope the buyer takes all the plastic out of the interior and boils the back tires bald!
I believe that this car in 87 was the fastest production car by an American car maker!! (Correct me if I’m wrong) To me that’s disgraceful to say thinking that there were Corvettes, Mustangs and other iconic American cars built and the V-6 turbo was the fastest!!
Don’t worry. In 87 a V8 was faster. Just happened to be in a Porsche 928s4
Auction just ended. Reserve not met at $105,100.
Reserve not met @ 105,100 !!
This hobby is for the rich folks now. I remember back in the 80s they were giving muscle cars away pre internet days. I drove all mine around it’s a shame people have that kind of resources to put cars in plastic and let them sit. Drive em until the wheels fall off. You only live once.
Back in 1987 I ran across a GNX in my built 455 Pontiac Can Am. The Buick was new but the swollen head booby driving it thought he was a genuine ball of fire. So on the feeder road of I-10 we had ourselves a little stop light to stop light pissing contest. I won but that Buick stayed with me. It was no slouch. The only thing that beats cubic inches is rectangular dollars. That pimple head driver was a little green around the gills. That goes to show you that there is something always faster. And to the first person to comment,Jesse Mortensen, it is the 1970 GSX with over 500 lb/ft of torque that is the king of the Buick’s, not some vacuum cleaner with a turbo charger bolted on it. If Chevrolet was allowed to turbo charge a fuel injected small block or Ford decided to do the same to a 5.0 back then you would not even be talking about a Grand National, much less a GNX
I would rather have a super wildcat 465 or a 455 for the engine with a 4 speed manual transmission instead of the turbo charged v6 with an automatic transmission
