62k Mile Survivor: 1971 Pontiac GTO

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Finding a 2 owner GTO is getting to be rare. PRA4SNW found this example located in Lake Worth, Florida. It is listed for sale here on Craigslist for $29,000. It appears to be in original condition and has traveled just 62,000 miles since new. This example appears to be pained in Code 67 Castilian Bronze. The GTO was listed 4 days ago. The car appears complete and comes with factory paperwork and build sheet.

The interior looks stock with the standard Pontiac three spoke steering wheel. Some of the plastic and the top of the dash has changed to a darker brown than original from sunlight. The car has bucket seats separated by a console holding a factory automatic transmission shifter. The GTO is equipped with power brakes, power steering and air conditioning. The driver seat appears to have tears in the seams.

The seller states that the GTO has its factory 400 cubic inch V8 engine. Fed through a 4 barrel carburetor, the engine was rated at 225 net horsepower and was the base engine in 1971. This car has a dual snorkel air cleaner but does not have the ram air hood induction like the 1969-1970 GTO. A buyer could also choose a D port 455 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 255 net horsepower. The performance option was the new round port HO 455 cubic inch V8 engine. It produced 310 net horsepower as Pontiac declared that it produced more net horsepower than any other Pontiac engine. That statement is still debated today.

The 1971 GTO received a facelift with a larger grill opening and flush wire-mesh split grills. Pontiac also introduced its new dual scooped hood that was pushed to the front of the hood. This car does not have the sport mirror on the passenger side. It rides on color coded Pontiac Rally II wheels and white wall tires. In 1972, the GTO received recessed front grills and air exhaust vents behind the front tires.

Nice looking stock Goat. You don’t see that many like this anymore. At least we have 12 photos on Craigslist! But the speedometer picture came out blurry . How come it was not a redo of the speedometer? For $30,000 should have pictures of the chassis and exhaust system. And better shot on the bottom of the fender, door and quarter panel for proof of no rust.. It’s really nice to see stock muscle cars like this. Must be a blast to drive it. Good luck to the seller. 🐻🇺🇸

I agree should be more under car pics for the $.I think it’s definetly worth it if it’s in the condition it looks to be. Cool color I like it alot.First thing I’d do is ditch the white walls.glwts.

Looks like a potential great find. It needs a close inspection of course, but might be a gem.

Very clean GTO,well worth the price,as far as the 455 ho being their most potent engine is very debatable,at least the way it was tuned and the restrictive parameters it had.If the engineers at pontiac were able to tune it anyway they wanted and had a higher comp ratio, like even 9:1 or 9:5 it would of easily been 450hp or more.

For factory 68 RA II or 69-70 RA IV but the 455 HO was no slouch Dan Jensen’s T-37 455 HO was running low 13’s at the Supercar Showdown in 86-87 were the engines had to be stock DOT Street Radials allowed :)

Nice car, I’m always kinda amazed when someone has a car like this and they post it on Craigslist where if they posted it here or some other well known auction sites they would probably get more for it.

CL can be a bit hit or miss. In the case of this GTO, the seller has had it listed on both CL and FB Marketplace off and on for about two months now. The seller has come down in asking price from the mid 30’s. Kinda surprised it has not sold yet but this market has definitely cooled from its peak crazy a year or two ago. Nice looking color combo and what appears to be a fairly honest car. For a Pontiac fan, there is a lot to like with this one.

It’s had at least a trunk floor put in it, and quite badly I might add. In front the spare tire, you can see were they made the splice. The seam doesn’t line up, and it looks like they left a self-tapper dead center of the splice. Being located on the coast of Florida an in person inspection is a must, as there is most likely more subpar bodywork done.
