40-Year Ownership: 1973 Porsche 911T

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

If you missed the last little red Porsche I wrote about, here is your chance at another one. This 1973 Porsche 911 T is at a current bid price of $32,100 at time of writing. It is located in Hampstead, North Carolina and has a VIN listed and a clear title. The listing does claim that the car is a numbers matching, but it still seems like a find worth taking a closer look at. You can find it here on eBay.

The engine is a rebuilt, 2.4-liter boxer 6-cylinder, with mechanical fuel injection. That is connected to a 5-speed manual transmission. Many other things are listed including new axles bearings all around, new Dansk muffler, new alternator, SST heat exchangers, mechanical chain tensioners, and a recent oil change. According to the listing, the tires and brakes are in good condition and all the car has all 5 original Fuchs wheels.

Based on the lone interior photo, this car looks stunning inside. A new headliner has been installed. Factory S gauges are also installed on the car. Something that might make Doug DeMuro proud, the original tool kit, jack, and owner’s manual comes with the car. While the owner claims the car does have some small imperfections, which is nice, they say it would be a good candidate for restoration or turn the key have fun as it currently sits.

Information in the listing has a summary of a Road & Track article that describes why a 911 T is such a fun car to drive. The seller also suggests looking up specific YouTube videos about the car, which they have titled in the description. I think that the seller, who is reluctantly doing so due to old age, is trying to communicate just how much pleasure this car has brought them and hopefully can pass that on to the next owner.

I sure know how selling a Porsche like this feels after driving it for so long. I bought my 1967 912 for German delivery and had it delivered to me right at the airport in Stuttgart, along with about 20 other drivers who were doing the same thing. This was a program sponsored by the Porsche factory in cooperation with the Porsche Club of America. We had a chartered Lufthansa 707 both ways from the west coast. Round trip air fare then was $435. We would then spend 3 weeks touring on our own and then all meet in Hamburg for a big farewell dinner sponsored by the factory. The cars would be taken to the docks and shipped to your west coast port. A wonderful plan. Too bad the factory does not do this anymore. Selling that Porsche after 30 years was like selling your best friend. But moving on to my bright Signal Red 911 Porsche was somewhat comforting.

Having sold (reluctantly) my sunroof ’70 911 T a couple of years ago, I am always happy to see a long time owned P car. But a couple of things look like owner customized.

I believe he has a pre 66? wood inlay laid over the basket weave on the dash. Seats of course I think are not oem. Looks like it has a respray as there is paint on non painted items by the front bonnet hinges, The front valence and S gauges were added too. The shift boot is out of an 80’s P car. Not big deal of course but this would require a thorough PPI.given the amount of money involved

Not unusual for someone to customize a car they have owned a long time. I just saw a friends ’66 911 SWB yesterday. Bought it from the original owner who is now 85. Stunning car that was driven as it was meant to be and she took care of it ,

Anyway these are super fun cars to drive, unburdened by the overly complicated computer driven metrics of today’s analogous sports cars.

If you like seat of the pants driving combined with unparalleled aesthetics, these cars cant be beat.

Now if only I can hit the lottery!
