40k-Mile Roadster: 1980 Alfa Romeo Spider
The Spider was an open-air, two-seat roadster built by Alfa Romeo from 1966 to 1994. The second generation, which would comprise the seller’s nice example, was in production from 1970 to 1982 and these cars were assembled by the famed Pininfarina in Italy. Depending on the model year, the Twin—Cam engine size varied from 1.3 to 2.0 liters, with the seller’s car likely having one of the larger powerplants (no photos).
Production numbers of the second-gen Spiders reached about 53,000 copies and many of those were exported to markets like the U.S. We’re told this 1980 edition is a one-owner car with just 40,000 miles that can be validated by the title. It has a 5-speed manual transmission and is said to perform quite well. The photos provided depict a clean sports car with no rust or issues with the paint (as we can tell).
These spiffy cars don’t turn up too often these days unless you happen to belong to an Alfa Romeo club. Located in Oak Lawn, Illinois, this one seems to be reasonably priced at $4,800, though the number of photos offered seems to outnumber the words in the seller’s description. One of the last year for the no spoiler cam tail which is a cleaner look to me. Unfortunately 1980 & 81 are two of the years to avoid due to a really detuned engine (things like a single throttle body instead of individual TB) and beginning right after these years came the Bosch electronic injection which proved to be reliable and without all the unique SPICA “characteristics” while returning some of the lost pep.
That said it seems pretty fairly priced….or at least it’s “cheap enough”….
At that price, there is something major wrong with this car or something is very fishy! $4800 for a nice Alfa Spider with only $40k miles. No way.
True that!
Very nice cars, could ease up on the tire dressing some. Powered by the tried and true CHAIN DRIVEN twin cam, going back to 1954 equaled only by our Rambler inline 6, although worlds apart. It sure looks like a fun car, however, with no takers or bids, I just wonder if interest has fizzled this much. Everybody that looks at the post knows full well it will need constant tinkering, and I just don’t think people are up to that anymore. Thoughts?
Looking at the rest of the submissions, that Honda 900C for $850 looks tempting or the upside down airplane for $25gs is interesting, but just looking at the other ones, a MGB, $1600, Midget, $650, even the Willys pickup at $2500 and from a big area like Chicago, not Bugtussle AR. things are changing fast in the hobby. That’s a good sign, however, the ones it will benefit will no longer be able to enjoy it. Talk about a conundrum.
LOL at the tire dressing applied with a firehose.
At first glance I assumed the car was being photographed in Texas as it appears the tires are melting.
A neat little car and a lot of fun to drive. If I feel good and see the right one I’m buying.
Paint damage to both sides of engine hood. Chicago. Poorly-written and too brief description. Maybe stolen? Be careful.
