428 Cobra Jet: 1968 Ford Torino
This 1968 Ford Torino is equipped with a 428 Cobra Jet engine and only 660 were produced. Car & Driver thought the horsepower rating on this engine was under-rated. This car is listed for sale here on eBay at a price of $38,000 in Santa Rosa, California. The car is painted in Meadowlark Yellow with a black interior.
I like cars built in the 1960’s that have the ignition switch built into the dash. Just a cool look. The black vinyl seats, door panels and dash look to be in excellent condition. The engine transfers power to the rear gears via a 3 speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. The seller states that the car is a nonsmoking car which I hope means cigarettes and that the engine doesn’t smoke either!
Power is derived from a 428 cubic inch Cobra Jet V8 engine. This motor produced 335 horsepower from the factory in 1968. The car is said to run well and has been garage kept most of its life. The car features tinted glass, power steering, power brakes, posi traction rear end and highway gears in the rear axle.
The Ford Torino was built from 1968 to 1976 so this was the first year for Torino production. It is considered an intermediate car and came in 2 door, 4 door and station wagon models.

Actually, with a 3.91 rear axle ratio this lovely Torino would do better with the stop light drag racing than highway cruising. If I remember correctly, a 3.00 ratio was standard, which would be a better highway ratio.
Quite the ride here, a real life ’68 Torino GT with Cobra Jet power for serious motivation. Not the most seen musclecar, maybe more recognizable from the rear?

It is very nice. I had a ’69 Fairlane Cobra (non-ram air) with the same long flag on the front fender. I have never seen a ’68 with those on the front fenders, maybe added? Then again not many ’68’s with the 428 made.
Thumbs up to three pedals would have been better, and the song. Hard to imagine, “the man” was convinced banana peels have a psychedelic effect.

Tried to order one new, infact I did order one new. 427, 4 speed and nothing else, after a couple of weeks Ford informed the dealer that I could get nothing but a 428, automatic, and power disc brakes In those days you did not want those options and the 428 was a slug for Thunderbirds. So I gave up that beautiful body style, cancelled the order and went across the street and bought a Biscayne with no options except L72, 4 speed and 373 gears and tinted windows. A few months later Ford got smart and said you could have a fours speed and we were starting to realize it was not a T,Bird engine. . On the bright side the Biscayne was faster. However I sure would like to find a four speed 428 fast back Torino
If you knew a dealer well enough, and the dealer had a direct line to the order line you could have had one. I ordered a ’67 Falcon Sport Coupe with a 289-225hp, limited slip, and a 4-speed, beautiful car 2750.00 new. Dealer stated I could special order the 289-271hp for a “his” price. Dad said no, 225hp was enough. It took 8 weeks to get my car delivered……

All the grooviness, rebellious ideals that seem to be pop counter culture legend fifty odd years later,,,, I dont see it with this here Ford…the Man’s car. For me this is really Ford, more than the Mustang, like the rough undercover cop trying hard to fit in with the “crowd”. It’s plenty tough and strong, has a bit of hip style to it, but the suspects in the GTO aren’t convinced…..yet.

Yes, all, it’s very hip for its time, nice example here, I prefer the automatic, advancing age is the reason and I have some 4 speeds not domestic.
Black interiors here are really tough in hot Summers here. Would have to redo this in Tan and install A/C. Which removes a lot of the meaning of the
car. Well done BF.

The 428 CJ basic block was the Police Interceptor short block with better breathing heads. 335 HP WAS very a conservative underrating, probably pushing closer to 375 HP for the non ram air version. This one looks to be VERY original, because it still has the air injection system for emissions control. I’m not crazy about the yellow, a medium blue would have been better, with a white interior. Just my personal preference. However, If I had a few more $$ in my pocket, this would have been my choice:

The ’68 Torino would have been just the car for the annual Woodward Cruise in August! Oh well, born either rich or good lookin’, and I wasn’t born rich, so I must be good lookin’. (;-)
The police motor was rated at 360 horsepower.
I joined the FOMOCO Auto Assembly Division, General Offices, in Allen Park in 1967 (driving a ’66 Chevelle Malibu 2drht with 327, power pack and dual exhaust with 4 on the floor.) my last name is Chrysler, so I was nick-named “Brand X”. I was told you could ‘order’ a custom car from Ford, i.e., you could order a car with or without almost ANYTHING, including various options of chrome trim, if you knew how to do it, and create a personal ‘one off’.
