21k Genuine Miles: 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis
For a person looking for a more luxurious classic car, offerings from the now extinct Mercury range are certainly worth a look. Mercury offered some extremely nice cars, and while this 1990 Grand Marquis GS might not excite some people, it is certainly a car to look at if your focus is more on comfort than performance. Prices and values on these cars make them an affordable entry into the luxury classic segment, as this particular car demonstrates. Located in Lady Lake, Florida, you will find it listed for sale here on eBay. At the time of writing, spirited bidding has pushed the price to $2,850, but the reserve has not been met.
The presentation of this Mercury is pretty hard to fault. The Light Titanium Metallic paint looks to be really nice, while the grey vinyl top gives the vehicle a classy feel to it. The exterior trim and chrome look to be in good condition, as do the wire hubcaps. The overall condition of the car is very impressive and is probably well within character for a car of this type that has only covered a claimed 21,000 miles since new. The owner also refers to the vehicle as being garage kept, and the condition of the vehicle makes this easy to believe.
Under the hood is the 5.0-liter Windsor fuel-injected V8 engine, which is backed by a 4-speed automatic transmission. This package produces 150hp, but with a vehicle that weighs in at better than 3,800lbs, performance is not ever going to be startling. The Grand Marquis is designed to be more of a luxury cruiser than an outright performance car, and it fulfills this objective quite well. As befits a luxury car, you also get power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning as part of the package. The owner doesn’t give away much about how the Mercury runs and drives, but if the claimed mileage is correct, then it should run and drive well.
Apart from the addition of an aftermarket CD player, the interior of the Mercury is as it rolled out of the showroom. The general condition of the interior is extremely good, and once again, it is indicative of the sort of condition that you would expect from a low mileage car that has been well cared for. The only note of caution that I would sound would be with the carpet on the driver’s side. It is quite dirty in a couple of spots, and this is generally out of character with the rest of the interior. The 1990 Grand Marquis required a few changes to the dashboard when compared to the 1989 model, and these were required to accommodate the introduction of a driver’s airbag as standard fitment for the first time. Being a luxury car, in addition to the airbag and the previously mentioned A/C, you also get cruise control, power windows, a power antenna, a tilt wheel, and rear defrost. There’s no way that you can feel neglected in this car.
The reality is that in the current market, the 1990 Grand Marquis is not a car that is worth huge money. However, this particular car has a number of attributes which give it a real advantage. The first is the mileage. If this can be verified, then that will be a huge plus. The second is the overall condition of the car, which is extremely good. The third is the color combination. This Grand Marquis is finished in what is considered to be one of the most desirable combinations, and there are no obvious issues with the panels, paint, or vinyl top. It’s also worth considering how the demise of a car manufacturer can have a marked positive impact on the value of certain vehicles within their range. There is the potential for that to be considered with any Mercury product. A good, low mileage example of the Grand Marquis can sell for around the $5,000 mark, and that would be where I would expect this one to head. When you think about it, that’s a lot of luxurious metal for your money.

These are nice cars. We had two of them. A silver 88 Crown Vic that burned up due to Fords infamous faulty ignition switch. One day, The car looked good outside, just looked like the windows had a deep tint, open up the door and the dashboard was melted to the carpet!
89 Grand Marquis after that. Pewter color with a landau roof and every option possible. That car went to around 250k and never owed us a dime. Someone actually stole the grill from it for some reason. These were really comfortable cruisers in their day. We had a few Chrysler’s after that with nothing but issues.
They still are really comfortable cruisers.
The rug tells a different story.
I strongly agree that this is a really nice car. As of Friday evening (March 1) the bidding on eBay is at $3,650 and THE RESERVE IS OFF! In my opinion, at this price somebody is getting a huge bargain. There is still a little over a day remaining in the Auction (ends Sunday night) and I concur with the author that the eventual selling price will likely approach $5,000 which in the condition with the low 21k miles is still a bargain.
Carpets will look like that if you don’t use floor mats. Comfy car for some long distance highway cruising.
I’ve owned no less than 4….Starting with a ’84 Grand Marquis, moving on to an ’87. From the ’87, I went to a ’88 Crown Vic traded for a ’90 Crown Vic. Very comfortable ride with pep for many years. These are very nice, smooth riding Fords with a decent MPG return.
Dad had four of these from ’82 – 2000. All but one were great cars. Traditional American cars, we will likely never see again, save for the current 300 & Charger (sorta). I’m thinking this example is part of an estate or the owner no longer drives. At one time there were a ton of these in Arizona where the folks retired, now they have all but disappeared. If I was closer I would enter the bidding fray partly for the nostalgia factor. These were great cruising cars.
I had a ’91 and it was one of the best road cars I ever owned–and it was 20 years old at the time.
These Mercs were great riding cars!
I have an ’85 LS, this exact color & vinyl combo. I got it last year with 8,024 miles, purchased from Haggerty’s for $10K. The car went through a complete refresh, with 3 pages (in VERY fine print). Crazy stuff, like new motor mounts, tranny mount (s), ALL rubber under the car replaced, of course, the gas tank was cleaned, the entire fuel system cleaned, everything perfect. Never smoked in. Full documentation confirming mileage. $3500 for the refurb. Converted to 134 for the auto climate A/C. It’s like brand new. It was a gift from a very good friend. Original window sticker. I really love driving this car, but it’s not the car of my dreams, and could never sell it for the money that’s invested in it. The asking for this one is a really good deal. These are really nice cars.
My previous car was an ’89 LS, absolutely smooth and absolutely silent running and so smooth riding. My Ford technician friend agreed it was a happy combo of parts assembled by a good crew on a good shift on a good day. Drove it until 2008 when I was able to buy a 2003 basic GS with 8701 miles for $9K. Not as smooth, noisier and less smooth ride.
Had an 89 cream colored wagon with the wood grain…great riding car
Thos type of car is what i miss! Im 49 years old grew up withbquiet, good riding comfortable cars like this. Sadly nobody makes anything like this any more. I can still remember looking at these new in the dealership and i still remember the impressive new car smell these had. Wonder if this still has that new car smell. If i had room id consider it
