2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

The 62nd Pebble Beach Concours took place Sunday, August 19th at the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links. The golf course shuts down entirely one day each year so that, arguably, the greatest Concours in the world can take place along the historic 18th fairway. Featured classes included Saoutchik Coachwork, cars of the Maharajas, and Mercer. The Shelby Cobra also had a featured class that was prominently displayed at the head of the field.

Traditional “Monterey Mist” greeted attendees and participants in the morning. The fog and mist burned off for a few hours, but then took hold again for the rest of the afternoon. It was an amazing day of discovering rarely seen automobiles and motorbikes as well as making new friends.

It is not everyday that you see a couple of swans on Stillwater Bay (1910 Brooke and 1919 Cygnet). These ugly ducklings were among many other unique automobiles which were once owned by Maharajas.

This 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet A was a top-of-the-line cruiser when new. The “K” meant this big straight-eight was supercharged!

No stranger to Concours events, this aviation themed 1938 Hispano-Suiza Dubonnet Saoutchik Xenia Coupe was built to showoff a new independent suspension design which was later sold to a few big name manufacturers.

Period dress is always a treat…

1935 Duesenberg J Gurney Nutting Speedster – The model J was meant to be the best automobile ever built. This one is even better because of the beautiful speedster body.

1957 Ferrari 500 TRC Scaglietti Spyder – built for 2 liter racing, it was the last of Ferrari’s four cylinder cars.

1932 Duesenberg J Rollston Torpedo Berline – Here’s another J. It’s a Duesy!

Could this 1961 Aston Martin DB4 Series IV Touring Coupe be a barn find? Take a close look…

And finally, the Best in Show – a 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Saoutchik Torpedo. This one sat in storage for over 30 years before being restored. You can read more about the car’s history in this article by the NY Times. The cut down windscreen, lizard skin style upholstery, and 6.8 liter supercharged engine make this Benz look a little like a German hot rod. We like it…

We want to give a special thanks to Brad for his coverage of Monterey Auto Week!
