Project Pair: 383-Powered 1964 Dodge 440
The seller has two unrelated Dodge automobiles that are both projects. The first is a 1964 Dodge 440, which was junior to the Polara that year. The second is a 1970 Dart Swinger which was the sporty variant of a boxy compact. We’re told both machines are mostly complete but are in varying states of disassembly. You have your choice of the one that best floats your boat as no package deal is suggested.
1964 Dodge 440
As you may recall, Chrysler downsized some of its full-size cars in 1962 based on the assumption that the competition was doing the same. That turned out to be bad intel, so through 1964 cars like the Dodge Polara were at a size disadvantage compared to Chevy or Ford. The 440 was not as well-equipped as the Polara but was still a lot of car for money. This Mopar spent most of its life in North Dakota. When you go about restoring the car, you will have to source new seats.
It’s powered by a 383 cubic inch V8 that has been rebuilt and tweaked by a speed shop. It’s paired with an A833 4-speed transmission. That set-up replaced a smaller 273 V8 with a “3-on-the-tree” manual. The asking price is $8,500 and it’s in Cambridge. Minnesota.
1970 Dodge Swinger
The Swinger debuted in 1969 as Dodge wanted to add some pizazz to the rather stodgy but reliable small Dart. This one comes with a rebuilt 340 cubic inch V8 that has a 10:1 compression ratio using a 1972 block. This engine will require installation and is connected to an automatic tranny. It began life as a Slant-Six Dart, so a V8 K-member was added.
Like the 440, this project is in pieces, in and around the same shop in Minnesota. It’s said to have a good body that hails from South Dakota. $9,500 takes this one home and both cars have a variety of photos portraying their respective conditions here on craigslist. An attaboy goes to Barn Finder T.J. for bringing this pair to our attention!

Seriously? 9500 for 3/4 of a Dart Swinger? Even BHCC isn’t that crazy!

The 64’s worth a look. The body seems pretty straight and the rust appears to be minor. Decent B-body projects are thin on the ground, even though it’s not inexpensive it might not be a bad deal.

The ad says no seats, but comes with a low mileage performance built 383 and 4spd, both of which are pictured.

That 383 “has been rebuilt and tweaked by a speed shop”. When, in 1972? Both cars are stupidly priced.
I hope I don’t bore folks with my dusty memories, if I do, ts, it’s wonderful therapy for me. Saves the state of Colorado thousands in psychiatric costs.
A neighborhood chum, who we all experienced growing up together, from 10 speed bikes to motorheads, had a blue ’64 Dodge EXACTLY like this. It had a 361, we put a 4 barrel on, put the shifter on the floor, cruised many a night down the “Ave”( Wisconsin Ave) with that one.
Fun fact, for me anyway, I hadn’t seen “Mike” since I was a teenager. My brother had a 50th wedding anniversary last summer, and guess who showed up. I hadn’t seen him in 50 years. Naturally, our car shenanigans came up, and we had a great time.
I have a soft spot for the 64 having owned a 330 sedan, but that 383 looks like it sat for a loooong time maybe too long. No interest in the swinger, not enough there for fun times without a sizable cash influx.
Ummmmm. That ain’t no big block in the 64. Looks to be a 273. Wouldn’t ya want to show a picture of the speed shop tweeked 383 in the car? Maybe I missed something here?
Nope and Nope!
