383 And A 4-Speed: 1971 Plymouth Road Runner

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Up for sale is a 1971 Plymouth Road Runner that is in need of some work. While the seller says it doesn’t run, all the engine and body panels seem to be there. The asking price is $14,500, but if you read on further, there might be a way you are able to get it for less. Currently residing in Denver, Colorado, the car has a VIN listed and a clear title. Thank you, Ikey H., for the tip. You can view more on Craigslist.

A few photos show the condition of the claimed to be original, numbers matching, 383 cubic inch V8 that is connected to a 4-speed manual transmission. The transmission is claimed to not be original to the car. One of the last photos in the listing shows a perfectly restored Plymouth with a vinyl top. They indicate that this car could become that car after a full restoration. Pretty sneaky selling tactic.

Inside, the original interior is in decent condition. The black and orange bucket seats complement the exterior color very well. According to the listing, the build sheet and paint description check off sheet were found in the headliner. There is no story on how that happened, but they seem to think that if you are a true Plymouth purist, this will be an incredible piece of the car’s history to have.

Up until this point, it might seem like the car would be worth the price for the condition it is in. However, the seller lists a link to their website that, in the description of the car, notes the price at being $1,000 cheaper. If they don’t change it by the time of writing, screenshot it and use it for negotiating power. Clearly, there is significant wiggle room on how much they will accept for this Road Runner.

If the 383 doesn’t run, offer 2 grand and put a nice 318 under the hood. They are cheap and reliable, plus pretty nice with a four speed.

2K, your dreaming Sandy, though I agree, in a better world, 2K would be a fair and reasonable price. I also agree that a standard 318 would make a very nice car, but the childish ones among us are going to drive the price up and a big block to lay rubber is what will be under the bonnet. I will never understand why a grown man would want to behave like a kid and rev an engine and spin wheels. Probably the same people who do not put a good muffler on their cars, so we all are forced to live with their choices.

The ’68-’70 Chargers were such a tough act to follow and time has confirmed that they are a landmark design. These next-gen Pentastar intermediates are beginning to be appreciated more even though the power levels were down.

This is simply a good-looking car that deserves to be treated fairly. And driven.

We’ve seen this one recently already. Spotted that blinding chrome air cleaner, the seats, and the shifter immediately. Said it then, that is a lot of orange, nothing wrong with that either but a black interior would have looked better against orange accents and paint.
Yeah, first generation Road Runners and second gen Chargers were and still are a tough act to follow, but I like these RR’s a little better than the Charger of the same year. Still plenty of growl in ’71.

Seems a bit steeply priced…but worth saving. As a bonus, Road Runners have the best horns ever put into an automobile!

Dare I say that if this body style had been produced by AMC, everybody would be trashing it. It’s Plymouth’s answer to the Javelin, and the Javelin is a much better looking car.

Yeh buddy, I’d clean it up a tad bit and drive it as is, all day long…and lay down much rubber whilst doing it (cause it just so happens I’m one of the childish ones among us). These cars weren’t built to be parked and spit shined all day (no fun in that) ….THIS is what has driven the insane prices up.

Body’s straight 4speed is a big plus and the front end is one of the best looking Plymouth front ends of all time!! I really like the car but agree with John it needs a pistol grip!! I’d love to try to get it running if the price was about $9000 lower!!!
