34K Mile American Icon: 1955 Ford Thunderbird
This 1955 Ford Thunderbird appears to have lived a pampered life with just over 34,000 miles on the clock. It has been repainted to match the original color with the body and chrome appearing to be in phenomenal shape. The early Thunderbird’s were dubbed as personal luxury cars because there wasn’t much of a U.S. made sports-car market, other than the early Corvette, at that time. Although in the 1955 model year, the Thunderbird outsold the Corvette by a landslide. Its sporty lines grasped the nation as it’s one of the most recognized cars among classic car enthusiasts. This 1955 Ford Thunderbird is listed here on eBay in Nicholasville, KY with a current bid of $25,700 and the reserve has not yet been met.
The 1955 Thunderbird could be ordered with a soft top or matching removable hard top painted the same color as the car. The sale includes a new soft top and an original hard top but the seller doesn’t disclose if its been painted as well. The Kelsey Hayes Wire wheels suit this car perfectly with the crisp new white wall tires that are ripe and ready for the road.
The dashboard and gauges look to be in outstanding shape along with the rest of the car. And according to the seller everything works as it should. All that’s missing is the turn signal lever. Replace that and you will have yourself a complete interior. The dark turquoise carpet looks clean as well. It is equiped with a smooth shifting automatic transmission.
The seats are original along with the rest of the interior. I see very slight discoloration in the white part of the seat and small cracks are beginning to form from age and use. They may not be perfect but for being 64 years old they are in great shape. I would have to agree with the seller that the interior shouldn’t be touched because of the originality and completeness, minus the turn signal lever. But that will be for the next owner to decide.
This Thunderbird is equipped with a 292 Cubic Inch V8 that kicked out 193 horsepower in its heyday. The engine bay looks to be in wonderful shape and the seller states that there are no leaks. Also equipped in this sweet ride is power steering and power brakes, two things I’ve come to appreciate in classic cars. If you were to buy this classic Thunderbird what would you do with it? Take it to your local car shows or maintain and preserve its low miles?

I’d buy it and drive it. If I just want to look at a car, I’ll buy a picture of it . :)
I am in the U.K. just about to retire, I will send my pension, just send me any change
Alan, I’d send MY pension too for this, however, the seller would likely reply, “Thank you for sending the price of the radio volume knob ONLY. Would you like to purchase the rest of the car?” LOL
This is my dream car… and if I owned it I would drive when the weather was warm & sunny otherwise it probably would not leave the garage.
If I bought it, I’d definitely drive it to my hearts content. It certainly wouldn’t be in my top five favorite colors for these, but at least no one added a Continental kit !!
Still miss my ’55 – back in the day I traded my ’59 Corvette even up for the ’55 Bird and never regretted it. Painted it Mustang Poppy Red, with Hollywood mag wheels. Loved that car, and hope to have another some day.
Nice car, but 6 volt and no fender air vents, too hot. I’d prefer the 1957, no 1956 with the stupid looking spare tire hanging on the rear. Oh well, just saying’.
Looks nice but would need documentation to support the mileage claim. Get it on a lift and take a look if you’re serious. I’m just not quite feeling the love for this for some reason, although I like these cars generally.
The removeable hard top is painted the same color, as the car. This car is a driver….much likey
