36K Mile: 1980 Pontiac Trans Am Indy Pace Car
Located in Wichita, Kansas, this unrestored 1980 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Replica has traveled only 36,000 miles since new. Based on the pictures in the ad, the car looks like it has even less miles than reported on the odometer. The seller states the car has spent most of its life in a climate controlled garage. The Turbo Trans Am is listed for sale here on Craigslist for $28,500.
The Turbo Trans Am was introduced by Pontiac in 1980 and came with a 301 cubic inch V8 engine that was rated at 210 horsepower. This was the highest horsepower engine option offered by Pontiac in the Trans Am after production of the W72 400 cubic inch V8 engine ceased in 1979. The Turbo Trans Am was reported to run the quarter mile in 16.1 seconds by contemporary magazines. Pontiac offered the Indy Pace Car replica as a special edition to be used as the Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500. A total number of 5,700 Indy Pace replica cars were produced in 1980. Accordingly, they are not as rare as some other Trans Ams and come up for sale quite often. However, they are usually not in this condition.
The Turbo Trans Am Indy Pace Car came fully loaded tilt wheel, air conditioning, rear defrost, automatic transmission, WS6 handling package, T-tops, power windows, and power locks. The Indy Pace Car had a list price of $11,194 in 1980 and made quite a statement with its white and charcoal paint. I have owned a number of Turbo Trans Ams and they are sluggish from the factory. I owned 55k mile car like this but it was modified by TTA Performance of Kenosha, Wisconsin and it performs comparably to a stock 1977-1979 W72 400 Trans Am. The main adjustments include a larger turbo downpipe, increased boost and water injection.
The ad states that this car had one owner from 1981 to 2017 and has 95% of its original paint. The Turbo Pace Car is reported to not have been in any wrecks and the seller is including the factory build sheet and assembly manual. I think this car is reasonably priced for its condition and rarity.

I get it only has 36,000 miles and it’s a Turbo Indy Pace Car replica, but 28.5 large? Seems too high. $22.5K seems more realistic
Late second gens have done well. If they’re black add $10-$20k. $25-$26k is what I think the seller will see in offers. If willing to hold out, may see something even closer to asking.
