1-Owner 5.0! 1993 Mercury Cougar Classic Edition

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

When a car is bought new in 1993 and driven until the owner is 95 years young, there’s some serious love going on there, which is the story of this 1993 Mercury Cougar for sale here on Craigslist.  The original buyer is now 100, and the son says this was her pride and joy until she retired from driving 5 years ago.  Thankfully, she also opted for the 5.0 engine, so if you’ve been looking for a seventh-generation Cougar this one’s probably worthy of your consideration.  The car is located in Denville, New Jersey, and comes with an asking price of $5,000. Rocco B. spotted this one and sent in the tip, and for that, we’d like to say thanks!

These cars were somewhat popular in ’93, with sales totals reaching nearly 80,000.  This one features some nice touches outside, such as a real leather roof and a luggage rack on top of the trunk lid.  The owner’s son is selling the car for his mom and says that the Cougar has been garaged its entire life since new.  The one exterior issue that’s mentioned is the front fenders, which are said to have some rust spots, but otherwise, the body is stated as immaculate.  As good as the car looks overall, I’d probably just enjoy driving it for a while before I addressed the corrosion up front.

Standard under the hood for 1993 was a V6 engine, but the 302 V8 was optional and some good news is that’s what you’ll find here.  The son says he has performed all the maintenance from day one, and that the motor still runs perfectly.  A new modern transmission was installed about 5 years ago, but that was about the time the owner stopped driving, although the son still takes it out about once a week to keep the juices flowing.

Things inside are stated as perfect, a rather strong proclamation but it does appear to be really well-preserved in there, with the Classic Edition headrests on top of those leather seats.  Remember the period when shoulder belts traveled to the front part of the door as you opened it?  If not, you will soon, as this car is equipped with them, like it or not.  The seller says he realizes this is a niche vehicle, but I’m kind of digging it and $5,000 seems like a decent price for what we’re seeing here, especially with the 5.0.  What do you think?

Very nice well kept car, and the last year one could be had with the 5.0. The price is more than reasonable. The name Cougar really got around, I believe it was used on more configurations than any other nameplate through its 35 or so years of existence.

A few of them lured me back to their lairs, but I was a willing “victim.”

Could be a good buy, but really needs a good inspection to verify that. Am I the only person that looks at that upper radiator hose and seems to wonder why there is a serious vacuum on the cooling system or the hoses that broken down due to lack of cooling system maintenance. Just be careful folks, I like these and would like to find one as a clean daily driver. These have true 4 wheel independent suspension, and handling is there strong suit, not burning rubber. This probably isn’t the one. Plastic roof covering in FL sun is probably a bad idea anyways.

That upper rad hose is the “space saver” hose, it leaves extra room when it’s not in use.

A little more info would be nice on what makes this a Classic Edition. The padded roof had to be a part of the package, and the luggage rack, the chrome wheel moldings, the mag wheels. There has to be a special emblem on the car somewhere. I’ve never seen one before. Inquiring Cougar lovers want to know.

Woofer, I was curious about that as well, in fact the only thing I spotted for certain was the headrest badging:

There may also be something identifying on the sides of the leather roof, but I couldn’t quite make it out.
Are any Cougar aficionado readers here who can shed more light on this?

On a vehicle this old, it probably has the original radiator cap that may now be defective. Replace the radiator cap with a new one may fix the radiator hose situation.
