1 of 777: 1960 Edsel Ranger

Ford’s $250,000,000 Edsel experiment seems like a relative bargain given how much PR, both good and bad, the company has gotten out of these cars since the 1960 model year when they went bye-bye. This final year car, a 1960 Edsel Ranger, can be found here on eBay in California, Missouri with an $11,250 buy it now price or you can make an offer.

What a unique car, Ford made 777 two-door sedan Edsels in their final model year. And, speaking of final model year, that’s a story in and of itself. The final run of 2,846 Edsels were all made by November 19, 1959, after which the company closed their doors. So, a 1960 Edsel wasn’t even made in 1960, in fact, there was no Edsel in 1960. Of course, most car companies came out with their new models in the fall, just to at least partially cover that exposed base. I think that the 1960 Edsels were the best, design-wise.

The seller says that this 1960 Edsel Ranger is a better buy per pound than a Shelby Mustang. Moving right along… It sure is a unique styling exercise, those tail lights, and reverse lights are cool and odd and fun and funky and strange. The Ranger was it for 1960 Edsels other than a Villager station wagon, and they were basically 1960 Fords with Edsel touches here and there.

There are no engine photos which is a bit strange given that this car is located at a car dealership and the seller says that it was in fact stored at an old Chevrolet dealership for years. Surely someone there has a way to get into the hood and make with the snappity-snap. In any case, it should be Ford’s Economy 6 which is a 223 cubic-inch inline-six with 145 hp. The interior looks good and the “E” logo on the back seat is very cool. They say that this car needs a full restoration but it sure looks like a person could get it working great and just drive it. Are there any Edsel fans out there?

    Looks nice and it’s rare. I am a fan of the original Edsel styling with the “sucking a lemon” face, so this one looks toned down and a bit ordinary save for the interesting tail lamp treatment.

      The term I once heard was that the 58s looked like an Oldsmobile sucking a lemon.

    Wow is that nice. If i had the money, it was gone. For shure. Love these rare models. Think i would drive it as is.
    I know a guy there has a wagon of this model. Extreeme rare and cost more than my collektion plus workshop. It is top $ condition

    The tail lights were also used on 1960 Comets.
    Originally Ford was going to sell the Comet under the Edsel brand until the end came in 59

      The tail lights weren’t the same as a 1960 Comet but the front turn signal lens was shared – clear on the Edsel and amber on the Comet. You’re correct that the Comet was originally designed as Edsel’s compact car.

    What a nice car, and the last owner of 30 years was a pastor…. better in my book than the “little old lady” who was likely to scrape a fender backing out of the garage.

    Nice looking car. I’ve never seen a 1960 Edsel. I’ve seen pics of them, but I’ve never seen one up close and personal. Given how many were made before being discontinued, I can’t imagine that there are that many out there.

      Yes. The 1960 Meteor Montcalm was a re-badged Galaxie 500. Would love to both the Montcalm and the 60 Edsel

    Now this is an Edsel I’d proudly park in my driveway…just not for 12.2. Eight sounds about right.

    It sure seem like a lot of tooling and design work went in to a car that they only copied 777 times. Now 59 years later they must be rare indeed.

    The last one in an era of Edsel’s that people had a love/hate relationship with!! Anyone I’ve ever talked to about them either loved them or hated them!! No one ever said it was ok or take it or leave it!!

    I like the rarity factor, but really, Edsel dropped the ball on styling this thing. Doesn’t really look like an Edsel, looks more like something out of a Tokyo street scene from a 1960’s Mothra movie.

    Oddly ordered car – full hubcaps , radio ,two tone paint, fender skirts , carpeting and cloth seats , with a 6 cyl and a three on the tree . Being a higher line car than the Ford, I wouldn’t even have thought those were available

    I’d buy it in a heart beat if I didn’t already have 2, the only ones on the Central coast of CA. I bought a wagon so must sell my 2 door. They are so rare you’ll probably never see another one, unless you go to the right car show. I have to thank the internet for the chance to get mine.
