BF AUCTION: 1974 Pontiac Formula SD-455 4-Speed
If you liked the Firebird we just featured, but would prefer a 4-speed, here it is! This is also a rare and powerful 455 Super Duty, but it is equipped with a manual transmission and is painted Pinecrest Green. It’s showing 53k miles on the odometer and a ton of documentation is included. This is a Barn Finds exclusive auction so be sure to keep reading and place your bids below if you’re interested.
The SD-455 was the top dog when this car was released. It offered the most power and durability you could get in a Pontiac engine. This car was built near the end of the muscle car era and one could argue that it was about as good as you could get from any manufacturer in 1974. This particular engine was rebuilt by NUNZI and is ready to enjoy.
And enjoy you will! A previous owner replaced the automatic transmission with a 4-speed to add to the fun. The original transmission is included with the sale, but why would you want to install it when you have a manual? Heck, who needs a radio either? Especially when you have a 455-SD out front! There’s no radio, but luckily you do have power steering and power brakes. Come on, we aren’t complete barbarians here!
The Pinecrest Green is a handsome and rare color. It looks good on the more subtle Formula body. This is a car for someone who wants to go fast without catching the attention of the authorities! Well, that or someone who appreciates rare muscle cars. This is one of 58 made with the automatic in ’74. Crazy to think we are currently auctioning off two of those cars right here on Barn Finds! Focusing more on 60s fullsize cars I’m not the typical Camaro/Firebird buyer, however this is a car of my liking. Such an elegant color combo, period yes but still not out of place today. Streetable yet bad ass engine coupled to a 4spd -what’s not to like here…? Best of luck to the next owner, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it ! 😁

Great to see a green one. And I see another green one in the photo gallery. Am I missing something? I see no info from the seller as the other auctions here have. Interesting oil light above the cigar lighter also. Maybe a drag car with the auto and no radio back in the day. She is sweet!

Nice to see the std “tuck & roll” seats & door panels for a change here & on the other sd formula too. & no a/c in either for the “empty under the hood look”.
Even tho there’s no radio on this green 1, there still is an antenna in the windshield with a wire behind the dash to connect to a radio if u later so desire!
Hidden wipers were std on the t/a but not the formula. This formula does not have hidden wipers!
It deserves a genuine repro sd exhaust system, considering how rare this car is.
Yes it’s super rare, but i can’t believe the hood scoop still is sealed!
Those w/o a fat wallet can build a 400 or 455 these days with lot more power that wont break the bank. & you can switch to a OD trans too & change the rear axle ratio.
The glove box door color on these cars never quite seems to match up to the dash.
I guess that’s a hurst shifter.
Glad both the sd’s here have rear spoilers & rally 2’s, though i like the dished ’72 chrome trim rings & center caps better than the brushed ones here.
The Brewster Green Firebirds were always my favorite. SD cars are commanding big money now. What will be the final price in this one. Inquiring minds what to know!

What a nice machine we’ve got here! Like the color on this one, nice and bold. With that 455 SD and 4 on the floor this was without a doubt the strongest car available in ’74, no one else was building anything like this by mid decade.
Too bad the Super Duty 455 didn’t debut in ’70, higher compression, less smog, more timing, everything this engine begged for. Just might have put the GTO ahead of the competition, or at least in the thick of it. Nice!

I think you meant “HORSEPOWER” but that is not what you stated.
I could include what was left of the 440 Mopars, your Javelin, nothing from Ford after the early seventies….let’s face it those cars weren’t performing any where near this machine here, not even the other optional 455 Pontiac offered in ’74. No, sir!
Early product info for 1973 Pontiacs actually listed the SD455 as an option for the Grand Prix, Grand Am and GTO too, thought it was never offered in anything besides the F-body and yeah, this was about the top of the performance car food chain for 1973-1974.
That was the original plan, I’ve heard several reasons but it comes down to trying to get the 455 SD emission certified illegally, got caught and had to go through the process all over again. Very very costly error on Pontiacs part.
It’s fun to go to Nunzi’s site and check out his 11 second four cylinder Tempest. I remember this was THE Pontiac guy back in the day.
