1962 Ford Galaxie 500 XL Convertible Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

With media-blasted metal, powder-coated inner fender liners, and freshly re-chromed bumpers, this 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 XL convertible in Aurora, Colorado upstages most of the project cars featured here at BarnFinds. In the words of the practically perfect gear-head Mary Poppins, “well-begun is half done,” and whoever claims the high bid for this Galaxie here on eBay should have few complaints about what’s been done so far. At least 12 bidders have driven the market value of this No Reserve auction beyond $8500 with about two days left to bid. The car spent most of its life in Southern California and more recently Oklahoma. Furthermore it’s been in the seller’s family since 1970.

Think white paint is boring? Check out how it pops with the bright red interior. Despite the excellent condition of these seat covers, new original-style covers come with the sale. The hot red bucket seats, console, and plenty of chrome bring a sporty feel to this full-size Ford. The detailed listing includes useful commentary about key systems and parts, with good news far outweighing the bad.

Dual rocket thruster tail lights graced the stern of many Fords of this vintage, a space-age detail nicely blended into the bumper. What might look like panels from a gray donor car are actually media-blasted originals, thoughtfully reassembled to show the car’s completeness and ease safe transport to the car’s new home.

A triple two-barrel setup topped the motor last time it ran, about ten years ago, and the seller intended to go back to stock this time around to compliment the car’s highly original condition. The original 390 comes with the car, and a fresh short-block rests in the engine compartment today. It may be tough to judge a book by its cover, but I’ve never had a bad experience with someone who presents a vehicle with plenty of pictures and a description that answers so many buyer questions up front. We’d love to hear from the new owner and continue the car’s story in the comments below. Where would you cruise in this 390-powered convertible Galaxie?

That dash….door panels…well, I guess the whole interior – is very handsome. Those little details – ✨️ – including the pedal covers, the console, shifter and shift plate. Wow. And, you can’t forget the door panels…
My favorites are the specificly angled, recessed, round red and white lights (or just reflectors?) in the beveled edge metal (stainless?) retangle. Truly a custom touch that leaves the other ’62 models lacking.

Fred, I agree that the XL option was very cool. I had a 63XL Convert, 352 engine,
auto. What a fine car it was and it lasted for 200k+ miles. The cost of the XL option was not that much, but it should make a difference today in the cost of the car.

I was 16, and looking for my first car, had saved up $1400 in 1969. Took my dad to look at a car just like this, but with a 4 speed. I had driven a stick a few times, a friends MG, that had a bad clutch. So, I gave the 390 some gas and popped the clutch, burning rubber down the street. I was grinning ear to ear. My dad wouldn’t let me buy it.☹️ Back then, a minor couldn’t title a car.

So Pat….. What became your first (Dad approved) car? $1400 in 1969 was no small sum. :-) Terry J

Why even mention the 3 deuces and heads after he sold them? The car itself is worth the $8700 bid given the condition of the body, interior and top. One of the best looking Fords they made. Nice!

Correct me if I’m wrong (LOL): The Tri Power was an option on the 406 not the 390. :-) Terry J

My dad had a ’62 with the 390 Thunderbird engine. That car would really scoot. It looked just like this. He bought it new
