1969 Plymouth 440 Fury III Convertible
Editor’s Note – Sometimes we accidentally feature the same car twice. Since each author has a different take on this Fury, we thought we would go ahead and run both.
It’s always nice to find a full-size convertible that’s not a Ford or Chevrolet. Not that there’s anything wrong with those, they just outnumbered their Plymouth competition to such a large extent that Plymouth’s Fury III ragtop, such as this Eagle, Idaho resident don’t surface too often. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of images included in this listing but there are enough to make a not-too-detailed assessment. Anyway, Big Red is available, here on eBay for a current bid of $4,150 with seven bids tendered so far.
I’d put this convertible in the “rare” category as there were only 4,100 Fury III convertibles assembled in ’69 along with another 1,500 Sport Fury rag-tops – one of the reasons these aren’t encountered often these days! The Big Three, GM, Ford, and Chrysler covered much of the domestic market in ’69, particularly with their entry-level participants, Chevrolet, Ford, and Plymouth, respectively. The problem is that Plymouth only managed a fourth-place finish in the ’69 production race with Pontiac occupying slot number three. While Plymouth churned out a respectable 751K units that year, it was a far cry from number one Chevrolet’s position of 2M – again, one of the reasons why 54 years on, ’69 Chevies are still commonly found and Plymouths aren’t.
This example is claimed to be a California car and boy, it still looks pretty good – it must have been well stored. The seller mentions minor rust spots but the two images included don’t reveal any problems other than maybe a partially faded finish. The chrome is fair and all of the stainless trim is intact. Can’t tell you anything about the folding top – I’m assuming there is one and that would be a question to ask.
Big Mo comes about thanks to a 440 CI V8 engine which may or may not be original. A 375 HP variant was available, and if I had this car’s VIN, I could decode it but alas, I don’t. Anyway, the Chrysler “RB” motor has been “completely redone” with a Sniper throttle body fuel injection system. The seller adds, “Also has new front suspension and steering, rebuilt transmission (TorqueFlite three-speed automatic)”. No word is offered regarding driving and operating characteristics but I have to imagine that the forward motivation is significant.
How about that interior – dazzle or checked door and upholstery panels? The carpet is said to be new and a custom dash (gauges?) are in place. The steering wheel looks like an optional wood wheel from a late sixties Chevy and I think that dash pad is pretty well split. The seller adds, “You can pick your color and interior” which makes me think the next owner won’t be impressed with either and will want a change – maybe so. This is an A/C-equipped convertible.
I like big domestic convertibles and I’m always pleased to find one from ChryCo for the reasons that I listed above. In this case, the big hopped-up 440 mill just adds to its allure, wouldn’t you agree?

Beautiful car with AC and a Biggly motor convertible whats not to like. Pretty hard to bid on a car with so little information tho. Seems like underside photos and a shot of the vin plate would be proudly displayed if you want top dollar. Or if you have nothing to hide.

I had a 69 Sport Fury with a 383 Police interceptor engine and Torqueflite. That thing would make your socks roll up and down at full throttle. I bought it from a buddy of mine for $250, when I lived in Kansas. And at one time, it was a real looker, but my buddy had had three collisions, nailing three of its four corners. I put over a 100 thousand miles on it before I sold it, for $550 and my ex had succeeded in taking out the fourth corner of it, while we were in transit, moving to California. It could take a hit!
The wiring looks like an electrician’s nightmare!!!! My mom had a ’68 Sport Fury convertible that was beautiful and pretty good for a 318. The interior on this one is sad indeed!!

I remember that car from The Brady Bunch. Michael Brady drove a Plymouth Fury convertible on the show and Jim Phelps on MISSION: Impossible used it to go to the rendezvous point to pick up his Manila envelope with photos and a tape player for the upcoming mission.
Mannix Mobile. Sold a lot of gasoline for Big Oil. Good show. He always looked so tiny in that land yacht. Chrysler definitely invested.
