18K Original Miles: 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider
If you’re going to place a bet on which kind of barn find will have the lowest mileage, a convertible is a good bet. The likelihood of a car like a roadster being used solely in good weather and on a seasonal basis is a strong possibility, even in warm weather states where there are some months that are too hot to enjoy a drop-top in. This 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider listed here on craigslist is said to have only 18,800 miles and is offered up for $8,500.
The seller claims this Alfa Romeo Spider is said to have been parked in the one owner’s garage since the 1990s and has been in hibernation for 20 years. Despite the design getting marred by the big, ugly safety bumpers in the late 70s, the Spider from the middle 80s actually began a nice evolution into a design that at least better incorporated the larger bumpers. The seller’s car appears to be very solid and underside photos are particularly impressive.
Now, when a car is said to have sat for ages, it can be tempting to believe the odometer reading. But we all know old-school odometers can roll over and cause some confusion as to what the real number may be. However, the interior condition of this Spider suggests that the low mileage is likely accurate, as the seating surfaces, steering wheel, and dash are all in excellent condition. In fact, the interior may be the Alfa’s single strongest selling point.
The as-discovered photos are a treat, and this shot of the tail lends further credence to the mileage: look at how lustrous the black plastic “stripe” is on the hindquarters, and the same goes for the antenna surround. The bumpers are likewise quite radiant, and those surfaces tend to tarnish after years’ of sun exposure. The seller has gotten this Alfa to run but notes it still needs some fine-tuning; even so, it seems to be a legitimate chance to own a near-new “Graduate” Spider.

I’ve had many of these. Wouldn’t want to place a bet on that mileage.

I was given a 69 duetto by my big brother when I graduated HS in 72. (little did he know that it would prevent me from graduating university thanks to partying and the lack of reliability of the alfa). I cannot fathom reviving a car with little intrinsic value after languishing for 20 yrs. slow, ugly rear and cheap plastic interior. pass.
If you’re going to sell a 18k mile car it might be a good idea to wash and wax it for a good presentation and my goodness close the trunk.
