Worth Restoring? 1970 Dodge Charger
Well, I asked the question in the title and I’m inclined to say no. But let’s not be hasty and take a closer look at this 1970 Dodge Charger, located in New Paris, Pennsylvania and available here on eBay for $3,250 – twelve bids tendered so far.
Dodge Chargers are popular here on Barn Finds and we are all familiar with the draw of the ’68 to ’70 models. Even in ratty shape, they command strong prices. And this has been the case for many years, it’s not a new phenomenon. This particular example is a bit different because it is debatable as to whether it is a’70 Charger or a collection of ’70 Charger parts. You really have to wonder how such a collectible car ended up in such a deleterious condition.
It’s important to recognize the positive qualities of a classic car that is available for sale. I’m not finding too many in this case. This Charger has a 318 CI “LA” V8 engine but it clearly hasn’t run in a long time; it’s missing a whole lot of parts. It also has an A904 three-speed automatic transmission but I have no reason to believe that it is in any better shape than the engine.
There is no interior. There is a view through the missing windshield and the floor-mounted gear selector appears to still be there but that’s about it. The seller tells us that this Charger is very rough, needs floors, among other things, so there’s not much to work with inside.
Underneath, the seller adds that this Dodge needs rails, front and rear, and quarters. I’ll add to the list, it needs fenders, a rear valance, a trunk lid, rocker panels and probably a hood. And that’s just the observable stuff. This Charger’s listing is very short on description but pretty comprehensive with images. There is very little here with which to work. This Dodge actually looks like it was used as a parts car and this is what’s left, not much beyond a rotted-out shell with a questionable engine.
I like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt but I’m not seeing anything here other than doubts. The current bid is actually pretty respectable considering that if you parked this Charger in front of your house on trash day it would probably get hooked with the other debris. And the seller may be doing really well at this current bid level which could rise in the remaining auction time – the lure of late ‘60’s-early ‘70’s Mopar is working its magic on what appears to be a complete hulk. Short of a few parts, and there aren’t too many, I’m seeing scrap value for this once proud Dodge. How about you, am I missing something?

I see something like this and it sends a shiver down my spine, but I’ve been reading Barn Finds long enough to realize how often for cars in this condition somebody will say “I’ve fixed worse” or “I’d like to take it on but I have too many projects already”. It’s now bid up to over $7000 with a day remaining in the auction. Never ceases to amaze me.
Maybe they need to change the town where its located to New Parts, Pennsylvania. They sure don’t have much in the way of old parts.
Who bids on this?. Is it the same person that bids on wrecked exotics. I can see it now . “Honey look what I bought”. Next thing gunshots ring out and he falls to the floor mortally wounded. She drags him to the car and has it towed to the crusher, gives the wrecking yard guy a few bucks to ignore the whimpering coming from the car a good day for her.
I’m there with you, Ikeyheyman-someone’s bidding almost $7100 to take this environmental science project out of the sellers yard.

Seriously, there is no apparent logic to the bids for this Pile of Sheet metal-so you’re most likely correct, gaspumpchas. Someone is artificially driving up the bids to benefit the seller.

My head is hurting from trying to look at the pictures in the ebay posting…but, someone must really be desperate for a 70 Charger; the bids already exceed 3/4 of the amount that I paid for my running and driving one, w/ an almost immaculate interior!
Either that’s a ’68-9 passenger door, or the silly ’70 only big door “scoop” was removed. Whitewalls look ok with no cap steelies. Even the body side molding looks fine.

the ’70 only big door “scoop” is an R/T option only. Regular ’70s had the same door as the ’68 and ’69.

Ok, clearly posted for entertainment value. That’s one expensive gas cap. Obviously, someone must have a ’70 Charger with an iffy past, and the vin# is the last hurdle to make $100 grand. That i.d. tag could increase the value of a Charger with no title quite a bit, no? Anyway, great to start the day with a laugh.
I love old Dodge Chargers (I grew up on “The Dukes of Hazzard”), but no way is that worth $7,000! I’d offer the guy $1000, flip it for $1500, and laugh all the way to the bank!

I can’t believe anyone would pay half of the current bid. If you got this for free you couldn’t make a dime on it. Even if you have the skills to do everything the parts alone would kill you. I’m guessing this is being bid up by shills. Why I have no idea.
