Too Good to be True? 1973 Plymouth ‘Cuda 340
The Plymouth Barracuda dropped its association with the Valiant compact in 1970 when Chrysler gave it and the new Dodge Challenger their own E-body platform. The ‘Cuda 340 was available from 1970 to 1973, replaced by a 360 in 1974. In 1973 and 1974, the ‘Cuda could also be had with a 318 V8, but why? The seller’s sweet ’73 Cuda 340 is said to be numbers matching and has the appearance of having been restored (though the seller doesn’t go there).
In 1973, just 7,209 ‘Cuda 340s were produced as both the pony car and muscle car markets were taking a downturn in demand from the late 1960s. Barracuda’s run would end the following year as Chrysler and American Motors (Javelin) exited that market after facing declining sales and mounting pressure from the U.S. government regarding emissions. Also, the insurance company had already jacked up premiums on performance vehicles.
The seller’s Barracuda is said to wear custom paint, which looks like Petty Blue (which was associated with NASCAR legend Richard Petty for most of his driving career). The seller confirms that the engine is the original 340 V8 and says it’s rated at 295 hp, 20 more than the engine put out at its peak with a 4-barrel carburetor. This hot rod also relies on an automatic transmission to select gears. The interior of the Plymouth also looks new.
If this car has been restored, then the seller’s asking price of $24,000 might be a bargain, if it’s legit (you don’t know about online ads these days). This ‘Cuda has less than 50,000 miles and comes with all its maintenance records over the years. The seller says it needs nothing but a new home, and will accept cryptocurrency and can arrange for delivery. From Miami, Florida, this Mopar is available here on craigslist. It’s not custom paint, nor Petty Blue, for that matter. That’s 1972’s contribution to Chrysler’s high impact paint palette, color code TB3, which Plymouth called Basin Street Blue. It was actually Chrysler’s corporate color, as well as Plymouth’s divisional color. The only thing “custom” about the exterior is the addition of the 1971 model year “billboard” decals, which were no longer offered by 1973.

Billboard stripes look cool, but seem out of place on a ’73.
By the looks of the interior, this car came with factory A/C. However, the engine compartment shows absolutely no evidence of any of the A/C components. I would be concerned that this is a scam. Be wary and proceed with caution.
sounds like b.s. to me, they had 240 horse and smogged out i say the ad and the guy are both full of it ,with no engine build info!
Yes, this scam was on Craigslist a couple of months ago. Same seller was doing similar boat scam on a boat sales website. I know because i entered into a dialog with the thief and traced it down.
