The Pinnacle Year: 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT
The Pontiac Fiero was built from 1984 to 1988. It was meant to be a game changer with its design, plastic panels and performance. However, compromise got in the way on its quest to production. However, by 1988, Pontiac finally got it right and this example may be arguably the best package produced. It is red, has the 2.8 liter V6, 5 speed and 4 wheel disc brakes. This car is listed here on eBay with 2 days remaining in the auction. The Fiero is located in Van Buren, Ohio and is currently bid to $9,000.
The car shows 65k miles on odometer but it looks like it has a lot lower miles. The interior looks stock and the seats are covered in a beautiful tan cloth. The Fiero has a leather wrapped steering wheel and a 120 mph speedometer. Options include T-Tops, Delco AM/FM radio, air conditioning, power mirrors, power locks, and cruise control. It was acquired by the seller in 2020 and has a clean Ohio title.
Under the rear hatch, sits a transverse mounted L44 2.8 liter V6 engine that was rated at 135 horsepower. That may not sound like much power but the car is light and fun to drive. The engine is fed via a multi port fuel injection and backed by a 5 speed manual transmission. The car looks solid with little if any corrosion. The exterior paint has been resprayed once. Whale tail rear spoilers are not my cup of tea but I think they look good on this Fiero GT.
Only 614 Fiero’s were produced in 1988 with T-Tops. The 15″ diamond spoke wheels look great. The tires are 20 years old and, while they have plenty of tread, I would replace them. The panels, glass and drivetrain as said to numbers matching. So if you can fit in it (and still climb in and out of this low slung 2 seater) this is a great little car!

I remember driving a few and they were very good but underpowered
Red with t-tops is excellent
However The interior is the multicolored tan ala gm and i cannot stomach it
Having owned a few mr2’s and a boxster , i do not think this car could please me but it sure looks good ..
This is the year to get, yet another case of GM finally getting a model right in its final year or two before giving it the axe.
May seem strange they’d invest so much in updating a model for just one, final year of production — in this case finally giving it the suspension and steering Pontiac engineers had intended from the outset (among many other improvements), before the bean-counters had their way to get it approved for production — but at the time they were still finalizing development of a second-gen Fiero which would have inherited all the improved underpinnings, making the ’88s a preview of even better things to come… which ultimately never came.
Thinking the powers to be at GM worried that this may out run the Corvette. By 1988 the C3 was just a shape of its former self. This wasn’t so much faster but handling was quite good and being mid engine it was better balanced. Sales were down and it was due for a new look, so out it went. Been a few with V8’s tucked in there and look out.
This car could almost not be cleaner. It’s not that big, maybe I can get it in my garage….. Also note it has a short throw shifter. That’s a great option.
But the shifter is rather tall if I remember right.
Definitely the right Fiero to get. Also not a big fan of that rear wing, especially with this year’s styling, would likely find a way to remove it.
Beautiful car. I remember when the Pontiac Fiero was on the market. I thought it was an awesome car to go against the likes of the Toyota MR2. How disappointed I was when it was discontinued. As usual, GM introduces something to the market, and then just as people start to express some interest in the car, they discontinue the car! I don’t get why they do that.
While searching for a new car in 1986, we looked at a Fiero and an MR2. The Fiero GT was pretty good – drove well, the little V6 sounded good. But after a test drive we opened both front and rear trunks to have a look. It was then we realized that if you had a flat, there was no place in the car to stash the hot smoking flat other than your passenger’s lap. We bought the MR2 (for more reasons than just the spare) and it is sitting about 10 feet from me in my shop as I type this…..
I was at a Pontiac show earlier this summer and Fiero was well represented
A convertible with a supercharged 3800
An LS that looked like it belonged there and other mad scientist creations
Initial offering of the Fiero was a gross disappointment. By the final generation they really got it right. If it got any better it would have taken a huge bite out of Corvette sales. That is the end of the story.
Ya’ll remember the fire in Michigan that destroyed 6 or 7 Fieros?
Such a shame.
About the only option this one doesn’t have is the super rare leather seats with lumbar. Great find.
