The Super Sport Returns! 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
After a twelve-year absence in the Monte Carlo lineup, the Super Sport was reintroduced in 1983 with unique front-end styling and a minimalist spoiler out back, along with European-influenced color coding all over the body. The SS run also proved successful for the fourth-generation cars, with impressive sales numbers including more than 24,000 units finding homes for the ’84 model and even more in the following two years. But only 4,714 were produced in 1983, making this one for sale here on eBay a moderate rarity. The Chevy is located in Patchogue, New York, with bidding up to $3,900 so far yet still shy of the reserve.
As cool as the lines of the revamped SS looked outside, gone was the high-performance big block that could be found in the last Monte Carlo Super Sport back in ’71. Instead of a 365 gross horsepower 454, buyers got a modest 305 rated at just 175 net HP, but the good news here is this small block has only traveled 57k miles, so if it’s been properly maintained there’s probably some reliable left inside. Chevy also raised the rear axle ratio to 3.42 for the SS, making that 305 feel a bit faster plus the F41 suspension package was standard equipment, so improved handling could be experienced even at lower speeds.
Only two color choices were offered for the Super Sport in ’83, either white or blue, with the finish here appearing to be in really nice shape from a distance. The seller has owned the car for the past five years and tells us the prior caretaker repainted it, and unfortunately, there are a few blunders once you get up close. Along with some chips on the nose, there are also a few flecks here and there plus an unusual roof blemish above the glass on the passenger side. But the Chevy looks decent enough for a fun driver outside, and I’d probably just live with these issues and enjoy driving it for a while before I began to address anything on the body.
Other than a few cracks in the dashboard, the blue and white interior seems to be in good shape overall, with 60/40 seats and a column shifter. This one is also well-equipped inside, with some features such as cruise control, power windows, and power door locks. While the car isn’t perfect, I’m sure it’s a head-turner and the ’83 model is a less common year, so the $3,900 is likely to climb before the gavel drops although I am curious where the seller may have set his reserve. I looked at one of these ’83’s at a Chevrolet dealer, a trade-in on a new truck, back in 2010. A little research showed this was the rarist year of production (for this generation). Only the ’86 Aerocoupe is more rare (at 200 units). Not comfirmed, but several sources say that half of the 4714 units were painted white. Do the math, and this blue example IS rare.
I consider this the ‘most raw’ form of this run, as the steering wheel is standard MC, and no buckets available. Not even G80. They would all make the roster in ’84. Buy one now, it will appreciate, as you enjoy it.
Even Rarer is the Last Year was the 1986 Monte Carlo SC, Yes SC that I bought in 1990 & it was the Base Model Sport Coupe ordered New From the Factory with the HO 305 & the SS interior minus the Badging. I only found out it was very rare Special Order Model in 2005 at a Car Show Held at Southampton Buick Pontiac GMC by the owner of the Dealership when the owner looked at the VIN & Confirmed it was the SS Drivetrain.

Yeah, for 84 only I believe(?). I owned an 87 for awhile, cool car, drove nice, got a lot of compliments with the black repaint sans decals and polished IROC wheels and all windows tinted, it looked much more menacing than it was. But with a 4 speed (let alone the larger 350)…I can imagine that would have upped the fun factor.
I bought one of these new, I was a mechanic at a Chevy dealer, drove it for a week or two two break it in and then took it on a two week six K mile drive out west. Had a blast and most places I went nobody had seen one. Not the fastest car I had driven but nevertheless it was fun.
Lost it in a custody battle but I still have the window sticker. Always thought about finding one, don’t have the spaces or resources right now.
I think the seller is aware of the body issues? I noticed he took pictures of most of the damaged areas. The passenger side fender is misaligned, probably from previous body damage?
The odometer has either been tampered with or the plastic retainer clip on the back side of the odometer is broken? I would say both? Probably broke the plastic trying to change the milage? These plastic retainers don’t break on their own.
The first number on the odometer doesn’t work now.
GM built these odometers this way to prevent odometer tampering.
The seller’s flim flam, ‘to the best of my knowledge’ disclosure statement doesnt mean squat, except to say, I don’t know?
It is a nice car and sure is a good candidate to restore back to a beautiful vehicle.
These Monto Carlos and Cutlass Supreme’s seem to be highly sought after now.
I’m sure the new owner will be very happy.

I remember when these came out new, Super Chevy magazine was salivatating to the fact that this car had 175 horsepower. A year before it was the same deal with the 82 Z28 only being a second slower than the 67 Z28 on the willow springs road course. Didn’t have a whole lot to get excited about in the late 70’s but things were starting to look up in the mid 80’s. Back then there was no way we could ever imagine V6’s ever having 300 plus horsepower or V8’s with over 700 from the factory and now the electrics are starting to make some noise, that worries me some because I don’t think we have the power grid for all the electrics they want. It wasn’t that long ago I remember the state of California having rolling brownouts because of not enough power, now it seems that state is really pushing the EV’s
Hmmmm…. Looking at the pictures on eBay, appears to be rust bubbles above the window & “bondo” on the lower right fender. And what is with the last picture of what is the hood, terrible paint problems! $5K would be all the money in this Monte…
See the listing has ended, but any of you ever seen a g-body dash cracked like that? I haven’t not even the ’78-80s.
For the car to have been repainted, there’s sure a lot of flaws; poor preparation always #1.
I sold a 84 ss bout..3 years ago..car was decent but the 305 motor is a weak sister.at 170 hp..just no power..hard to see collection ability with a 305 motor.in the car..it’s just a driver of 80 model gm cars..don’t pull it next to a 69 camaro..it’s just.out
Of it’s ability. With a sister 305 motor.and a 200 tranny…I like the body style but it’s no 70 ss chevelle..rj

GM made a ton of these through Dec. 1987, when production ended. I had a 1988 MC SS with every option. At fast idle, the exhaust was very throaty. Almost as loud as my 73 Corvette. I only had mine 2 years and like a dunce sold it for $9,300 in 1993. The guy I sold it to still has it. Was a very cool ride. Drove it to Carlisle from Bucks County, PA for the fall event with t tops out and Guns and Roses blasting. Car never gave me any trouble. I love the blue ones. Only available 83 and 84.

The Avanti Motor Corporation had purchased a number of these units to build the 1983 Avanti II…Mike Kelly tried to purchase just the chassis..but to no avail..had to purchase entire cars..Thus removing the bodies ( complete with interior) to utilize the chassis for the Avanti II build ..Therefore leaving an abundance of restoration parts for future use on these cars…
Interesting story. My friends were looking for something different to drive in ’83 when I suggested an Avanti. At the time a Chev. Buick dealer in Mpls. also offered Avantis at the time.
They moved to California and had to bring it to someplace in Portland, Or. that specialized in Avantis for service.
