The Ultimate Coupe: 1983 Audi Quattro
It’s rare when you find a limited-production European sports car for sale at any price, but when the ask is reasonable and the car has a chance at being restored, you need to move quickly. This is a limited production 1983 Audi “UrQuattro”, otherwise known as an Audi Coupe or simply the Audi Quattro. These were homologation cars from Audi’s dominant rally days and this one is listed here on Facebook Marketplace for $12,800 in Rhode Island.
As this car is in my backyard, it has been making the rounds through the various local Facebook groups. A friend did touch base with the owner, who seems to be pretty level-headed about what he has and what he needs to get for the car. This is a total project, and no one is hiding that fact. It has rust but it’s not catastrophic for a New England car, and the seller confirms that it does still run. It also has a clean title, which is a major bonus.
The Audi Quattro was made in a few different varieties and the actual gravel-chewing rally car was a different beast altogether. The U.S. did get stuck with a fairly mundane front-wheel drive coupe as well, but the Quattro was sold in very limited numbers with a turbocharged DOHC five-cylinder engine that spit out a healthy 172 horsepower and was channeled evenly front and back via an intelligent center differential. The seller’s car retains a half-decent interior, at least for a project.
The seller confirms the rust concerns are limited to the floorboards and rear trunk (for the most part.) In my opinion, with running drivers with no rust selling routinely for $30,000 or better, this is a fair asking price for a project. He will be keeping the aftermarket hood and trunk/spoiler combo (fine with me!) but for an entry point into a car that will easily sell for $50K or better in the coming years, this seems like opportunity knocking to me.

For me, this would be one of those “Who cares if I go underwater?” cars, assuming I had the scratch to buy now and could lay hands on the vaster sum a full resto would require.
These are brilliant road cars, no matter the weather conditions. Beyond the performance, they were luxurious and beautifully built. What’s not to love?
I’m going to envy whoever gets this. And hope they keep it in straight-out-of-Ingolstadt condition. Ur-Quattros are unique and should be treasured. And, of course, driven.
I think it would be easier to also look for an Audi coupe to cannibalize for rockers and floors. I know there is a difference but a 4000 Quattro probably has the same floor pan so maybe one of those if you can find one.
Rode hard and put up wet!!
To the right person which I’m not , I’m saving my nickels for a Lancia Stratos HI Fi with Dino V-6
I’ve got a black 85CGT that’s been sitting in my garage for the past 10 years, non rusted floors and rockers and straight body. All I need now is the purchase money.
Love these Ur-Coupe Quattros!!
Definitely a good price: good ones sell for 60-80k in Europe
Ref the rally cars. They used the lwb coupé like this for a few years as the basis for the rally cars. They changed the game…
The SWB Sports quattro was introduced later when the competition got closer, was always a homologation special and original examples are now mega money.
This one, on the other hand, seems a good value for someone with the skills required.
It’s a bee-ute Clark.
Annnnnndddd….it’s gone….
