Take One or Both! Pair of Vintage Triumphs
Triumph was one of many British sports cars to create a stir in the U.S. in the 1950s and 1960s Two of their most popular models were the TR3 (built from 1955 to 1962) and the Spitfire from 1962 to 1980 (one did not replace the other). The seller, self-described as a collector, has one of each for sale. Both are projects and both may be complete (though we don’t get to see the engine in the TR3). They are priced to move separately but the seller will consider a package deal.
1956 Triumph TR3 (aka Orange Car)
The TR3 was noted as being the “side screen” Triumph as it did not come with roll-down windows. Instead, removable plexiglass side curtains could be deployed during inclement weather. It was an evolution of the TR2 and would be replaced by the TR4 which was much the same mechanically. The original TR3s used a 1.991cc inline-4 engine that was capable of 95 hp. Front disc brakes replaced drums in 1956 (the year of the seller’s car), which was a first for the company and the genre of car. More than 74,000 TR3s were built, with 13-14,000 during the first generation (1955 to 1957).
What we know of the “Orange Car” here is that it’s from 1956, is said to be complete, and does not run. The engine is not stuck, and the vehicle has more than 100,000 miles. Though the title is clean, it’s in “non-op” status in California so in-state buyers won’t have to pay any late DMV fees. The asking price is $5,750 and it may be negotiable.
1967 Triumph Spitfire (aka Blue Car)
Though it did not replace the TR3, the Spitfire came along when that car was on its way out. Though British built, its styling came from an Italian designer, and more than 315,000 Spitfires were produced over 18 years. Underneath, a shortened Triumph Herald chassis was deployed for the 1,296cc inline-4 engine to reside in for the car’s third generation, which we think the seller’s vehicle represents. 65,300 of the “Mark IIIs” were assembled across four years. The vehicle was named after the fighter plane used in World War II.
Not much is said about the “Blue Car” either. But unlike the TR3, it does run and has new brakes. The clutch master will need work as well as some general TLC for the overall machine. It, too, has a non-op California title and the seller has priced it at $4,450. Both can be found in Gilroy, California, and here on craigslist where the seller would like to make you a deal to take both away. Decent prices and both good projects.
A spitfire identical to this was my high school ride.
Just to tell at age 76, I had a 58 TR3 back in the mid 70’s with the earlier small mouth “front apron” like this one, in about the same body condition, though mine was painted a semi-gloss red oxide color and had spot welds on the new rocker panels. I also had a 59 parts car parked out back. In 1979 I sold it before I got married along with other cars. The TR3 ran very well and I had put the correct wide mouth apron back on. So, back then a similar #4 TR3 that ran sold for $500, with top, side curtains and tonneau cover. Just last week I discovered a box of TR2, 3, 4 suspension parts in a box in the basement. What a hoarder!
