Turbo Diesel BJ60: 1984 Toyota Land Cruiser
Vintage SUVs continue to be very popular with people wanting an alternative to the mundane modern rides that get lost in the parking lot. Although the Ford Bronco seems to be getting the lions share of attention lately, vintage Toyota Land Cruisers have been hot as well. This one is from 1984 and although it has quite a few miles on it, it appears to be in very good condition. Found here on eBay with a current bid of $6,875, the seller says it was originally imported to Canada and now resides in Bridgeview, Illinois. Take a closer look at this vintage Yota and let us know what your favorite SUV is.
The seller is honest that the odometer “stopped working few years back” and estimates the current mileage of the vehicle at 290,000 miles. The engine is a turbo diesel and there have been quite a few rebuilt parts including the glow plug system, cooling fan clutch and rear drive shaft. New parts include the following: Suspension (shocks/springs), alternator, thermostat, braking system, starter, and side view mirrors. Hopefully, all that work will lead to good reliability for the new owner.
The interior is pretty typical with nearly 40 years of use. It could certainly be driven as-is or it could be refreshed with new carpet and upholstery. The aftermarket gauge pod under the dash include exhaust gas temperature and boost gauges, which is a good addition for a turbo diesel. The cargo area has plenty of room for a dog or two and some cargo.
As mentioned before, this is a nice looking Land Cruiser. The BFG tires appear to be fairly new and there appear to be very few issues with the body. Hopefully, it will find a new home and be enjoyed for years to come.

One of the first cars I ever sold, they were just brutal … it did give a nod to power steering and power brakes but that was all … no AT, AC, PW, or DL … and it had square wheels … not for the faint of heart but if you wanted to get anywhere this would take take you there … US didn’t get any diesel models then …and since Japanese cars were on allocation in the early ’80s they were all “home runs” and none sat on the lot long …
Awesome looking Land Cruiser. If only more of them were offered with a turbo diesel engine. Had I been old enough at the time to drive, I would’ve bought one. It’s a felony that such vehicles were never big sellers. You could get a GMC Suburban with a 6.2 litre diesel, but not a Land Cruiser? Why the hell not?! $6800 is a good price for a vehicle like this in decent condition. I only hope there are places around the USA that service Toyota Diesels.
I never drove one of these with the diesel, but sounds like the right combination. Manual transmission, dual range, and turbo diesel. Checks the right boxes for me. I would like to hear comments from people who owned them. Especially regarding turbo vs non-turbo versions. Bidding is rapidly approaching $10k, with 12 hours left.
I agree. I’ve never driven one of either. But I like the idea of a Diesel powered Land Cruiser. I would’ve ordered mine with an automatic. But to have the option of either, would’ve been awesome!
