Two Back-Seat Drivers: 1981 Dodge Omni Funny Car

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

To answer the question “Why would you weld 2 1981 Dodge Omni front-ends together?”, I think you have to answer it in the thickest New Jersey accent you can muster with “For ‘da kids”. You gotta admit, parade bound kids would love the extremely unique car found here on Craigslist, thanks to reader Doug T.

According to the seller, for only $500 you can own a car great for “…parades, shows, or possibly clowns!”. To create this piece of…art…some master craftsman looks to have kept one of the Omni’s front interiors almost intact, while the reverse mirror image holds a small portable gas tank, a manual stick-shift, the driver’s seat – and little else.

Certainly, the builder put a ton of work in the project, creating a car that “…can be driven normally, or it can be driven in circles or sideways…”. Very little of this car seems “normal”, but let’s just imagine the routines of a daily life with this car: driving through a toll booth, the rear driver waving warmly to the booth attendant. Or perhaps going through the drive-in at the local fast-food restaurant – and ordering different meals for each driver, moving up just a few feet so the rear driver can pay for his fries and a shake.

For a mere $500, there are lots of practical joke idea’s that start flowing from this inspired vehicle. If you’ve been searching for an inexpensive, odd, fun vehicle for your town’s parade – then your wish has been granted. If you’re just a prankster with an empty garage, then this little Omni might bring out your natural clown that seems to be in all of us!

Can’t think of anywhere that would let this monstrosity be allowed on public roads. No smoking 🚭 signs and flammable placards should be mandatory.

Of few of these types of cars were built in the ’70s and they were road legal.

Look up the Mercury Cougar that was once used on CHiPs.

If they made the lighting legal, they could drive it on the street.

That’s the first thing I thought of as soon as I saw the picture of this one. Dangerous and distracting on any road.

Thanks for the reminder of CHiPs Miguel. I was about 6 years old when I first watched. Saturday night show. Get put to bed, then bring out the matchbox/hot wheels all the toys to imitate the action instead of sleeping. Miss the simpler days lol

Has Red Green been around? Maybe not; he was more adept in making his masterpiece out of K-cars. But the add on gas tank is about his speed.

You could have a lot of fun with that for almost no money. Double enders used to be fairly common in the 40’s and 50’s largely as advertisements for auto body shops but it’s pretty rare to see one today.

    1) Rotate rear drivetrain 180 degrees and lock wheels straight. 2) install a fuel cell properly isolated from driving position. 3) Sync cable shifters. 4) Install roll cage. 5) Install racing seat and race numbers 6)Dominate Class C/win Index of Effluency at next 24 Hours of LeMons race after inviting me to drive with you!

Oh, no, no, no, no, no husband! 1) Purchase car. 2) Leave car as is. 3) Present to wife for upcoming anniversary. 4) Receive boundless Spouse Equity from woman who loathes going in reverse. 5) Alternatively, combine several pieces of already-owned “yard art” to create classic Triumph version of same.

      3) Eh, I agree with the writer that there is very likely a manual transmission on one end (the one with a single seat), so you’re going to be looking for a second auto trans setup to do that,,,,,

I remember when “4-Wheel Steering” was something many manufacturers were crowing about….

This takes it to another level, but two drivers required. I’d think at at speed, the guy going backwards certainly would have to know EXACTLY what to do…

Wait…what? You can drive this legally?
Hope your local PD has a sense of humor! I still recall the time that a friend
of mine got busted for driving a hot pink
’72 Pinto wagon with butterflies on it.
He was fined $500.00 for driving what
the arresting officers called a “dangerous
and distracting vehicle” Seeing this makes me wonder what they woild’ve done if he had a car like this.

Love it, WANT IT ! In a city like Columbus OH, no worries. Police here are very reasonable and don’t waste time on traffic violations, unless it’s something egregious, DUI, etc.

Texas chainsaw massacre had a cool Chevy Truck that could go 120 mph in reverse ! (lmao, don’t take me too seriously)

some of you guys take yourselves too seriously, although to be fair some cops do as well. Around here you would get pulled over a lot so the cops could get their pictures IN the car! So many things you can do with this, affordable fun for $500 Alex! Wait till the next jackass movie comes out!
