Triple White Wolfsburg: 1987 Volkswagen Rabbit Cabriolet
It was just a few days ago that we featured a clean, early Volkswagen Rabbit Cabriolet, and here we are with yet another one. That car appeared to be a low mileage survivor but the seller was challenged to verify the mileage; this car apparently leaves no such doubts and is listed as having a genuine 24K miles on the clock. Strange – that’s what the previous car had as well! This Rabbit is listed here on eBay with bids to $12,500 and the reserve unmet.
It’s funny how automotive stereotypes begin to fade over time as one generation moves into different arenas of their lives. When I was in high school, the Rabbit convertible was perceived as the “cheerleader car,” or the vehicle that a member of the pep squad was almost certain to drive. We did have a prominent cheerleader who had to have a cherry red Rabbit convertible, and she promptly drove it into a fire hydrant right outside the school. I suspect today’s high schoolers have a similar car that checks the box as a must-have item by certain social circles, but I’m sure the price tag of that vehicle would shock me.
This Rabbit convertible does look like a truly low mileage specimen, and it also bears another classic hallmark: the triple white appearance, with a white body, top, and interior. The Rabbit from a few days ago had a rarely seen cardinal red interior, but the white leather shown here with matching door panels is much more in keeping with Rabbit convertible traditions. There’s very little to fault here, and the Rabbit even comes with the preferred manual gearbox.
The seller acquired the Rabbit earlier this year and has made several improvements in that time. Some of his fixes include new shifter bushings, intake manifold gasket, oil pan gasket, drive belts, battery, and a replacement digital clock. The seller notes that “…someone needs this dream car in their collection for Christmas,” and while I can think of several peers of mine from high school that would likely agree with that statement, I’m guessing this clean convertible will be on its way to a water-cooled VW enthusiast’s collection at the auction’s end.

Much nicer driving car than the 82 model posted a couple days ago. This has the GTI running gear making them a real joy to drive. The Rabbit name was dropped around 85 or so and just called the Cabriolet which soldiered on until the mark 3 Golf came out. For those that question the black balls on the hood that is the vacuum reservoir for cars equipped with A/C to run the HVAC controls. White on white is a tough car to keep clean. Especially the top and seats.
Sorority Girl Car was the reputation here in SoCal and I took a lot of flack as a result. I owned 3 across the years, an ‘82, Mars red with gold BBS basket weaves and striped Recaro knock-offs from the factory (my favorite of the trio), an ‘87 very similar to this one (also red, but more “tomato” and less orangey than Mars), and lastly an ‘02 “Cabrio” blue with blue top over tan, my first new car and very modern. The transaxle grenaded on that one, but only after many thousand miles. These are very nostalgic for me for obvious reasons. I’m considering the ‘81 shown here yesterday, it’s 6 hours away. Fly in, drive home. This triple white doesn’t do it for me, way too “sorority” :)
I bought my wife an 1989 VM Cabriolet for mothers day shortly after our first child was born. its was copper metallic and had plaid interior She was surprised and loved the car. Sold it to my in laws who used it for several years and then sold it to their nephew and from there we lost where it went. Fun car, it was auto with A/c i upgraded the rims and tires and put a new top on it. Got lots of looks and complements on it esp the interior. Great on gas to. Wish i kept that one, had super low miles. Someone donated it to a charity and i bought it from there. Deff a ladies car but i drove it from time to time as did my father in law Triple white is nice
Nice car, but the triple white is a bit blinding to me. When I was in high school (just under a decade ago) the cheerleader car was either a Toyota Solara or a Highlander
I bought my GF one similar to this one 8 years ago. It is red and lived in California. The mileage is 150k but it runs like new and many things were replaced on it. Absolutely no rust on or under it. It could use a new top though. It’s a 5 speed and has air. I much prefer my older Escalade but I drive it once a while. I put a total of 175 miles on it in 8 years! It stays in the garage.

Ended at 14K, Reserve Not Met.
It might be the best one around, but that seems pretty steep.
