Tri-Power Project: 1967 Pontiac GTO Convertible
In the process of transforming the compact Tempest into a mid-size car in 1964, Pontiac also debuted the GTO (incorrectly thought of by many as meaning “Gas, Tires, and Oil”). It was a muscle car they expected to sell 5,000 copies of annually. Instead, first-year demand was six times that – and continued to grow. The car became a series in its own right in 1966 and flourished accordingly. This 1967 convertible looks to be in rough shape, and it comes with a Tri-Power 400 cubic inch V8. However, that setup wasn’t offered in the ’67 Goat, so a change no doubt has been made along the way. Located in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, this rusty project is available here on eBay where the bidding has reached $7,800.
After receiving some thorough styling changes in 1966, the 1967 updates were more limited. The most noticeable was the treatment of the taillights on each side. The displacement of the engine was increased by 11 cubic inches to 400 and the use of triple 2-barrel carburetors as an option was dropped and never officially returned. So, if the engine in the seller’s car is original, then the stock carburetor and intake manifold would have been replaced.
The seller refers to this car as a “barn find” but it looks more like a yard find from its outdoor setting. This Pontiac came with bucket seats and a console, but the overall interior is in pretty bad shape and will have to be redone from head to toe. The car is quite rusty, more in some places than in others, and the condition of the convertible top will allow the auto to deteriorate further if it continues to stay outside.
We’re told the engine runs, which implies that the fuel system is not clogged up from years of sitting. This car has a 4-speed manual transmission with a shifter that’s barely attached to the floorboard tunnel. More than 9,500 GTO convertibles were built in 1967 and the distribution of automatic vs. manual trannies was close to even, so this drop-top could be one of about 4,500 assembled. In addition to the car, the buyer will get to take home an assortment of spare parts, hopefully, useful in a restoration.

Put it back in the boneyard before the German Shepherd guard dog notices and takes part of your buns off.
For gosh sakes let her rest in peace!
Was tri-power available in ’67? I thought ’66 was the last year. It looks like there’s an engine and trans core available, but that’s about all. Too bad.
I had a 67 with 3×2’s but , NO. . 66 was the last year . . Mine came across the parts counter or maybe midnight auto supply . .
Never cared for that tail end compared to the ’66. This one wished it seen a barn!
This was sweet when new. But just parts now. I’m sure the frame is done too. There is 68 gto ragtop 3 streets over from me sitting in the owners field for the last 40 plus yrs. He bought it new. The wife shacked it out of the garage back then. A friend of mine has the same model he got cheap a few yrs ago. Mostly rust free and missing its engine. I sent my buddy over there hoping he might be able to buy the engine out of it. Closest of original to find I guess. He wouldn’t hear of selling engine which is probably siezed. The car is so bad it would take a broom and dust pan to pick it u. Maybe it will show up on barnfinds one of these days with an insane asking price.
