Ultimate Art? Ferrari Formula 1 V12 Engine
I’m trying to decide whether this might be the ultimate piece of motorsport memorabilia to put in a man-cave. If it isn’t, then it has to be close. It’s a pretty special engine, and it is a significant part of Formula 1 history. Located in Hialeah, Florida, you will find the Ferrari Tipo 044/1 engine listed for sale here on eBay. The price for this piece of man-cave art? $375,000.
The Ferrari Tipo 044/1 engine marked the end of an era for Ferrari. This 2,997.3cc engine was used in the 412/T2 Formula 1 car in 1995 and marked the final time that a Ferrari Formula 1 car would be powered by a V12 engine, a configuration that was much-loved by Enzo Ferrari himself. For 1996, it would be new V10 engines and then-reigning F1 champ Michael Schumacher behind the wheel. The Tipo 044/1 makes for some interesting stats: It is a 75º V12, with both the engine block and cylinder heads made from a lightweight aluminum alloy. The actual composition of this alloy remains a closely guarded Ferrari secret to this day. The cylinder heads each feature DOHC, while each cylinder breathes through a total of five valves. Induction is via Magneti Marelli electronic fuel injection. The entire engine as you see it here weighs in at 132kgs, or around 291lbs. While Ferrari rather conservatively listed engine power as being around the 630hp mark, by the end of the 1995 season, it was widely agreed that power was at least 100hp higher than this figure. The Tipo 044/1 produced this power by spinning at a mind-blowing 17,000rpm. To put the forces involved into perspective, this was Ferrari’s explanation in 1995. They said that if they were running one of these engines at maximum RPMs and a piston and conrod were launched out of the engine on an up-stroke and could travel vertically completely unimpeded, the piston/conrod combination would stop climbing after it had reached a vertical altitude of just over 1 mile in the air. With those sorts of forces at work, you can probably understand why engine failures during this era were so spectacular.
Enzo Ferrari once stated that aerodynamics were for people who couldn’t build decent engines, and he fiercely resisted any changes that would cause his team to abandon his beloved V12 engines. They did so by necessity between 1980 and 1988 when their cars were powered by V6 turbocharged engines, as pioneered by Renault. Their hand was eventually forced again when they had to admit during 1995 that their V12 engines were both too heavy and too thirsty to compete successfully against the dominant V10 engines built by Renault and Mercedes. This engine marks the end of a special era in Ferrari’s Formula 1 history, and if it isn’t the ultimate piece of man-cave art, it can’t be far off it.

I can’t think of anyone, myself included, who wouldn’t want this.
But then I can’t think, why?
For 375,000 I want a V12 Ferrari I could drive, maybe a 330 GT or 250 GTE, examples of both I owned years ago.
Why ? so you can buy that Red Geo Convertible also listed here today, take out the H-D engine , put this one in its place and be the topic of conversation for a long while at the local Cars & Coffee. Or if you are wealthy use this for the base of a coffee table, guaranteed to be the only one in the world.
That is a bad azz motor.
Really cool but at $375,000 it’s a little out of the question for my recent pinto build!!!
You have to be kidding.
Need a sponsor. Lets see, now a series to run it. Aaaaa, a car choice. Anything on Barn Finds to put it in? Need a crew. Vintage racing anyone? For free.
Look at feedback!!
With all the LS swapped everything, I say put it in an old Camaro.
@Grant. How about the Nash Metropolitan from yesterday?
I like the cut of your jib.
Why stop there?
Didn’t I see a Messerschmitt listed on Barnfinds recently?
🤣👍🏻
Bill Mitchell GMs top designer, did just that.
pontiac did put a V12 in a firebird. google pegasus firebird
The question is, does it run? Imagine firing this up INSIDE your home!
So if this was going to be static? expensive boat anchor!
I don’t see any transmission to start it up, or am I missing something?
Gorgeous engine! I could display something like that if I had the $$. Then again I don’t know how many houses I could have purchased with the money being asked for this thing.
Old Enzo was right on about aerodynamics. F1 is and has been in the NAPCAR mode for 15 years and both are really boring to watch. There is a move afoot to get away from the massive downforce and go to a run what you brung formula with limited aero and more of an emphasis on the total package.
Indy cars, sports car and sprint cars are the only real racing that is exciting to watch. That all being said, that is WAY too many bucks for that engine, no matter how gorgeous.
Put a plate of glass on top and call it a Ferrari Table
Hey! Free shipping!
Check his feedback. Seems like a better than even chance you’ll be unhappy.
Two gut busters in a row. 😁😂🤣
Just one here? Need a pair for bookends.
I’d just as soon have a good 327.
Had one of Foyt’s “spent” Offys that went into a coffee table for about 1/200th of this.If you had enough pics of this you could 3D it for a couple grand and pocket the change…………..
And this is what those Hi injectors look like in action (my son’s car): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fo_3BWa6tJI
Why? Even dropping the 3 it’s still too expensive
$375k and only 1 picture? Arrogant!
