Unique Kit Car: 1975 Chevrolet Camaro/Corvair

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

It’s hard to decide exactly what this automobile is. It was built by a kit car builder out of Massachusetts. It has a 1965 Chevy Corvair chassis and drivetrain. And it looks like a 1970 Chevy Camaro with T-Tops. So, does that make it a Camavair, a Corvaro, or something else? It depends on how the little machine was titled, but the manufacturing tag doesn’t tell us much. Whatever it is, it’s pretty cool and there can’t be many of these running around. This unique kit car is in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and is available here on eBay for $9,750. Thanks, Roger, for this super interesting tip!

The unusual kit car was built by KAR Manufacturing Co. out of Monson, Massachusetts. We understand – that at one time – the company was as active as Bruce Meyers or George Barris were in the dune buggy industry. Since the seller refers to this as a 1975 car, we assume that’s the year it was built. This one was crafted to resemble an early 1970s Chevy Camaro Z/28. The body is made of fiberglass as was the case with most kit cars and it and the paint present well overall, but you’ll find a few flaws if you look closely. The black interior was nicely done and looks even better.

Underneath the plastic should mostly be a 1965 Corvair using the 6-cylinder air-cooled engine of that era. Of course, it’s mounted in the rear and should have a displacement of 164 cubic inches. We don’t know if any internal modifications have been made. The motor is paired with an automatic transmission, perhaps a 2-speed Powerglide.

We’re told the car came to this dealer for resale from a private collection and it attracts attention wherever it goes, which isn’t hard to believe. The seller says it runs well but he recommends having a mechanic check it out before making a trip because the “Chevy” has likely been little used. The odometer and speedometer don’t work, so the mileage is unknown, and you won’t know how fast you’re going. But who cares and you’ll look cool while doing it! I kinda like it? A little. But I dont think Chevy built Corvairs in 1975. Maybe they meant 1965? The only problems I see are NO DOORS, and a car that LOOKS like a Camaro should have more than a 164 engine for power. There are more problems but I dont want to nit-pik. Ha!

It looks like a Camaro/Opel Gt love child, where the Opel was the Camaro’s sister.

Besides Camaro, I see pre-1978 C3 Corvette and AMC Javelin. Instead of what should be on that platform: One of the best American designs ever.

From the front, w/o my glasses, it looks OK. When things come into focus, not so much.

There is a reason we have never seen one before!!!! It was just a bad idea from the outset but might be fun to drive if you can get in and out?!?!?

Ya know, I kinda like it. Minus the no doors part that is. A mid engine Camaro, yep, I could go with that.

I’m just wondering how the stereo sounds with those Polk Audio Triaxial 6 x 9’s literally sitting IN the engine compartment. At least they had the decency to use a real Chevy drivetrain in it instead of a VW.

I saw the front thought it was just a nice Camaro then saw the rear ant made me think about some of the Corvette conglomerations from the past. Very strange and last thought was WHY use that engine, so you could be the first to be last in line?

Front end just doesn’t work–would have been mush better off to use the original 1967 Camaro front end, a lot more consistent with the rear end design.

There have been many valid complaints about the design of this car but for me, it’s when I’m looking at the first picture and noted the fuel cap sticking through the fiberglass on the hood that made me wonder what the designers were thinking. They couldn’t come up with a better solution ?

I have been around Corvair for more than 30 years and that does not look like a Corvair floor. The engine would have issues over heating and

I’m trying not to think from an English point of view because cars with no roof aren’t a lot of use over here.
No doors… plenty of 1930s sports cars had no doors.
Getting old if you need doors.

Not Corvair underneath, just stuffed in the back. These used a shortened Bug pan.
