Restored Droptop! 1968 Cadillac Coupe DeVille Convertible
When Barn Finds tipster Mitchell G. spotted this 1968 Cadillac Coupe DeVille Convertible here on Craigslist and sent it our way, he posed a topical question that I believe the answer to be yes in my opinion, and that is whether or not the car is worth the seller’s asking price of $29,000. Sure, any vehicle’s value is whatever an optimistic buyer is willing to pay, but with the amount of attention this one has received I’m guessing somebody is going to be no less than delighted for this cool land-yacht style droptop to be visible in their driveway. I’ll be curious to hear what our readers think, and thanks again Mitch for yet another great tip here!
The Caddy is presently located in Oak Ridge, New Jersey, where it has resided for the past 21 years, but before then the seller claims it was a southwest car and began as a rust-free example before the restoration started. A new paint job was applied over the factory finish several years ago, but not before some dings were removed and a small dent in the passenger side front fender was repaired. Since that time, the car has always been garaged under a cover and hasn’t seen any bad weather, with the owner grading the paint’s appearance as between an 8 and 8.5 on a ten scale. Judging from the photos, this seems like a reasonable estimate.
For 1968, DeVille buyers only had one engine choice, but when it was a 472 cubic-inch V8 making 375 horsepower who needs an optional drivetrain? This one’s been treated to a complete overhaul with hardened valves added so it will run on unleaded gas, along with electronic ignition. The original carburetor is still in place but it’s been rebuilt, and the automatic transmission has been serviced and is said to shift properly. In the past two decades, the car has only traveled 2,300 miles and is primarily used as a weekend cruiser.
Plenty of work has been devoted to the inside as well to get the interior in the condition we are seeing now. All of the leather has been replaced in the factory-correct color, along with the panels, plus the carpeting is new and the veneer trim has been stripped and refinished, with the convertible top stated to be in excellent condition. So back to Mitchell’s question regarding whether or not the car is worth $29k. As straight and solid as the Cadillac appears combined with the fact that it wasn’t a rust victim to start with, along with a nearly immaculate interior and rebuilt engine, my opinion is yes, that is if a ready-to-be-enjoyed 1968 Coupe DeVille Convertible is on your want list. I’m inclined to agree that $29K is a great deal. Love the upgrades ( electronic ignition etc.) This sure is going to get more looks and enjoyment than pretty much anything new. If I were in the market…I’d be up in NJ tonight!

Hagerty has this car at about 27K for “good”, and about 48K for “excellent. It seems well priced for the buyer at 29K.
Its a bargain for so much car. And what a magnificent ride these are. Unless you owned and drove one, it is hard to impart the difference between this and a modern “luxury” car. But be prepared to spend thousands for the correcting all the minor faults at he end of the listing, such as the top doesn’t work. In past years, these would be no big deal, but shops today are getting outrageous labor costs for diagnosis and repair of anything that is not figured out by plugging it in to a computer. A day in a shop can cost a grand and it doesn’t take long to make a bargain, well, not so much.
Easier if you were 11 when it was new like I am.
Just enough tech to eliminate the every 12K mile tuneup.
No hooking up the Tach/Dwell meter to make sure you set the points right,
But also no 150.00 diagnostic fee either! Seems like a win-win.

It is a DeVille. When the DeVille name was introduced, it was on a convertible and later added to the coupe and sedan. That is why you see DeVille on the rear fender and not coupe DeVille.
Only partially correct. The deVille name first appeared in 1949 on Cadillac’s new 2 dr ht, hence the name Coupe deVille, The Series 62 convertible did not become part of the deVille model range until 1964, tho’ it had been trimmed like a deVille previously. There never was a “Coupe deVille Convertible”. That is a contradiction in terms.

The pinnacle of Cadillac in the 60’s. Best design, best engine. The 69 models became bloated.
It is worth it IF a few more inspections would have been done. It is in New Jersey and a convertible and you mean to say there is no rust. Highly unlikely, but it would be good to know what rust on the floors might exist. Nonetheless I would love to have it and love to know a bit more about the rust possibilities so that I know what I have to repair. I don’t like surprises in a big car like this, though it is just a stunning example!

Why would the seller use craigslist or a nice piece like this? It’s under priced. I would watch out for a scam.
