Resurrected Stepside: 1979 Chevrolet C10

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1979 Chevrolet C10 short wheelbase stepside truck was found sitting in a garage since 1994. The truck was dusty and junk was piled all over it. The half ton pickup is said to have only 37,000 miles and is still powered by its original 454 cubic inch V8 engine. It is being sold by its second owner. The truck is black with a burgundy interior. For the first 14 years of the truck’s life the original owner only drove it to work a couple of times a week. He owned 4 trucks and left this one at home most of the time. I wonder what the other trucks were to exclude this one?

Under the hood is the original 454 cubic inch V8 engine backed by an automatic transmission. They truck is said to have started right up after its long slumber and run great. The seller states that there is no smoke from the tailpipe and the engine runs smoothly with no knocking. I couldn’t find the horsepower specs for this 7.4 liter engine but it was probably around 250 horsepower. In 1976, Chevrolet removed the engine cubic inch designation from the grill.

The interior looks all original and a little faded in places. the dash has some cracks but overall, it is pretty impressive for this old of a truck. Besides a column shift automatic transmission, the truck has air conditioning and is said to be fully loaded with every options. The frame and undercarriage look clean and this truck has the F44 option which is the Big 10 model. The C10 also has a sliding rear window and locking rear end. It is also equipped with cruise control.

While the paint is original, it has aftermarket wheels. Some really neat options include a tachometer in the dash cluster and a $231 convenience group. The truck is located in Orlando, Florida and is listed here on eBay at no reserve. The current bidding is only $8,100 but that should increase as the auction nears its close. There are 4 days remaining in the listing.

Looks pretty good for 137K, Tachometer’s stuck at the Redline, maybe that’s why it hasn’t been driven for so long

These 70’s trucks did not come with 1 million mile odometers. they went to 99,999 then rolled over to 00,000 again. because the numbers don’t line up properly.. that indicates the Odo has rolled at least once indication at least 137k miles.

Love the truck and would be interested but haven’t had the best of luck out of Florida.I see the rust pitting on the interior chrome (signal and shifter ) ,and wonder about the rest .

Back in the day, this would have been called a “Cowboy Cadillac.” It’s not hard to understand why the original owner didn’t drive it much. With that 454, it would have swilled gasoline like a pre-downsizing Cadillac. However, it sounds to me it was ordered for a purpose: the 454 and the Big 10 would have made it an excellent tow vehicle for a boat or drag car. Something about the stepside box makes it seem more like a recreational tow vehicle than a travel tow vehicle.

I bought one of these Chevy step side trucks that had been sitting in a car port for 20 years after the seller had the engine rebuilt. He put the oil and antifreeze in it, started it once, and then never ran it again. The truck body was disassembled and piled in the bed. I paid $1200 for it.
This not being my first county fair, I pulled the water pump knowing it would be a ball of rust ( it was), but the block was so rusty that I had to completely disassemble it, remove the freeze plugs and have it hot tanked. Even that didn’t get all the rust out of it. I had to put the power wash wand in through the freeze plug holes and power wash it out as best I could. I sold the truck minus the engine & trans as roller for $1200, but what a mess.
