Rebuilt 440 V8: Beautiful 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T
Dodge got into the “pony car” game in 1970, the last of the major auto manufacturers to join the party. The vehicle used an all-new E-body platform that would also benefit the Plymouth Barracuda. The R/T was the big-block performance model and accounted for 18,500 of the 77,000 Challengers built that year. The seller refers to this Mopar as being a “true survivor” but that’s not quite accurate as the paint has been redone and the motor swapped out. Setting that aside, this is one of the nicest Challengers we’ve seen of late here on Barn Finds.
The body on this Challenger looks as clean as a whistle and the green paint has been resprayed but reflects a few little knicks and dings from use. The undercarriage is especially nice, and the bottoms of the floorboards are flawless (no mention is made of any replacements). The interior is equally sweet and if the seats were redone, a professional was behind the work. Everything works as it should though a couple of the gauges are inaccurate.
We don’t know how long the seller has owned this Dodge, but he/she acquired it from someone who had it since 1986. Along the way, the original 383 engine was jettisoned in favor of a 440 cubic inch V8 from 1968 and it’s been rebuilt and produces 350 hp. The 727 automatic transmission does its job well, but we don’t know if it required any mechanical attention. The indicated mileage is 8,000, so could that be the accumulation since the engine change or 108,000 in total?
As you might expect for a car this nice, the seller has listed it with a reserve. Located in Macomb, Michigan, the current bid for this Challenger is $30,600 with no end in sight. 💯 Kevin. I love this one even w the autoloader. Kind of blends well in this quiet green pkg, no spoiler, but brings the heat w the 440. Very nice.

Pony car and muscle/super car are distinctly different things. Some pony cars can be considered muscle cars but they all follow the long hood short deck formula. Pony cars offer the full compliment drivetrain and suspension combinations broadening their appeal to all buyers like a common model line.
For the most part it looks good but.. a correct date code 383 and transmission need to replace that 440. Also, the engine color is off because that’s not Hemi orange but red. There are other things but these 2 really stick out.
Spend all that time and money might as well get it right and also makes it more valuable on the long term.
Another sexy 70 Challenger and although it’s not a numbers matching car if you can get in it for thirty to forty grand you’ve done well. Good luck on the sell. I wished it was my home that landed it..
Shame the A/C is gone. With a 440 I would also like PDB, not drums. Nice car, but I would wait for the features I want before putting down that kind of money.

Given the condition of so many 70 Challengers on this site, this is one in outstanding shape. Yeah, no numbers match but it’s well worth $40-45K

Nice. We like to see them without the tacked-on wings, spoilers and rear window slats. The stripe is subjective, hopefully not painted on.
