Reliably Fun: 1974 Triumph TR6

1974 Triumph TR6

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

UPDATE 8/02/2019 – This TR6 got bid up to $12,600, but the seller emailed us that the buyer, unfortunately, had to back out. It’s been relisted here on eBay and is sure does seem like a great classic for the money!

FROM 7/28/2019 – This 1974 Triumph TR6 is a wonderful, restored, modified, daily driver. The true mileage is unknown, but the seller says that it runs and drives amazing and it is very well maintained. It’s currently bid up to $8,400 and is hopefully close to reaching its reserve. A VIN is noted in the listing and there is a clear title. Currently, this little Triumph is located in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona and can be found here on eBay.

The 2.5 liter, 12 valve inline 6-cylinder engine is connected to an HVDA Toyota 5-speed manual transmission with a hydraulic clutch. According to the seller, they have driven it on a two-hour journey through the desert and the engine temperature remained consistently healthy.  Other mechanical notes include a refurbished radiator, tuned carburetors, and new control arm bushings and end links.

A lot of work was done to the inside by a previous owner, including rebuilt seats with new foam, LED lighting all around, and a new wiring harness. Each switch and gauge and everything electronic is claimed to work. The hardtop was pained French Blue to match the rest of the car. There is no soft top for the car, but it does come with the original and a new Robbins tonneau cover with the fitting kit.

The seller mentions that they have a Google Gallery of 160 more photos and two videos of the car, showing all its best and worst features. They do mention that there are some chips and dings here and there around the car. But, for a clean, running and driving, reliable Triumph, rock chips seem like a trivial deterrent at that point. This car would be a wonderful roadster to have tons of spirited driving adventures in.

If only they had put the Toyota Supra engine up front along with the transmission.

Get rid of the smog carbs and that’s a pretty hefty engine.

French Blue is the definitive TR6 color. Needs redlines as the finishing touch.

Ah, the TR6- in both the car and motorcycle version the batsman really hit the notch. The Italians collaboration with the Germans in the design resulted in an English car that didn’t look frumpy-even after the advent of the rubber baby bumpers front and rear! More than one can say for almost any other of that sad time in automotive history, and as Bob pointed out (above) it was a good performer besides!!! After the initial silly smog engineering of course. What this could have been with a GOOD FI system…
Very nice car, very nicely updated and a very unique daily driver or weekend getaway machine-but DRIVE IT REGULARLY PLEASE!! It’d be sad to see this beast find itself cooped up in a garage due to atrophy of its limbs..

I would suspect the reserve is twice the current bid price– it’s hard to find nice ones for much less than that.

This is one British car that I would buy, of course after a few mods like this one had! Too bad the owner forgot to shoe in a Toyota’s in-line 6 motor. I’m sure whoever eventually buy this car will not have to worry about LUCAS electrics!

Yup, LUCAS use to make the worst quality alternators, Gage’s, & fuel level senders on the planet.

These cars are amazing. Mods, other than smog equipment removal would only diminish the original character of this penultimate British sports car. The color is smashing! Wish current car manufacturers would use such solid colors instead of making everything in white, black, grey, silver, and other boring “colors.”

I had a 74. Lucas mechanical injection which nowadays is well understood and supported, at least in the UK. Four speed with o/d on 2,3,4.
It’s just 4’10” wide. One is sitting in a torpedo of throbbing machinery.
Unfortunately due to this n that it was off the road for five years, and during that time we bought a Rolls and we got soft.
I sold the TR two years ago, and as it drove away down the lane, I suddenly felt old.

Hello fellow Barn Finders. I did not know this was up on the site. I am selling it. What I can say is it was super hot the day those pictures were taken, and the car was dealing better with the heat then I did.

@Scott Marquis I agree with the red line comments. It would look cool, but the Michelin’s drive so much better then the re pops.

@sparkster yes I thought the same thing. A supra motor would be a blast.

@h5mind You would suspect correct unless someone catches me on a weak moment. I am ready to sell.

@Blackcatprowl its pretty subtle, and the LED’s go towards @Nevadahalfrack comment to drive it regularly. The LED’s help for my awful night vision.

Thank you for all of the comments.

Did not meet reserve. Absolutely still for sale. We have adjusted our price to where I think its a very fair deal. Its not a steal, but a fair price for a great car. You are welcome to reach out to me. You can find me at https://treasuredtransportation.com

I will be re listing it shortly ,and maybe Barfinds will update the listing link.

Ahh my favorite year TR6! Shame about the bad bidder; one reason why I quit ePay 3 years ago. Hope it finds a good home.

I still remember the day up in the bay area near San Francisco in 1968 when I first had spotted a new TR6. My first impressions then are still the same in 2019. Wow, what a great looking car. And yes I still want to own one. Yes I love this blue. And NO I don’t enjoy working on old cars on weekends any longer. I have had the short pleasure of racing against one in mid 70’s with my Mustang II. I got left in the dust after second gear. But I still think this would be a great car with Supra engine and transmission. But I understand the purist would hate me for converting this beautiful TR6 to Toyota.

Having owned a TR6 in the past, “Reliably” is not the word that comes to mind.

I do like how you can still see the connection to the Michelotti design of the Italia 2000 when the 6 is wearing a hardtop. Great color. Sorry I can’t bid.
