Rare Wagon: 1972 Cadillac Castilian Estate
Wow! You certainly don’t see these very often. The seller states that between 1975 and 1976 there were only 50 of these things produced, and who knows how many of these are still around today. The seller seems to be very knowledgeable on the history of the vehicle which certainly is reassuring to someone who is looking to buy. The seller is asking $6,000 for this pretty Caddy here on craigslist and it’s located in Dallas, Texas
If it’s been in Texas for most of its life, hopefully the rust is as minimal as it appears. You can see that the car is not completely without rust. There is some bubbling of the paint by the wheels which indicates that there is rust hiding beneath. The seller says that the car has been reupholstered and repainted. I’m somewhat disappointed in the quality of the paint job, as there seems to be some paint on the chrome–not to mention the scratch.
To be honest, I’m sort of disappointed with the look of the reupholstered seats as well. I assume this car originally had those big, comfortable, couch-looking seats that Cadillacs usually had in the 70’s. It just doesn’t have that luxurious Cadillac interior anymore. At least there’s plenty of room in here for the entire family to enjoy.
This massive Caddy comes with a powerful 8.2 Liter, 500 cubic inch V-8 engine. I can only imagine how fun this thing would be to drive. 1976 was the last year before Cadillac started to downsize their cars. According to the Craigslist ad, all this car needs is new tires. Unfortunately, no pictures under the hood were included.
Possibly my favorite part about this car is the back view. It’s so unique, there’s no way you could mistake this for any thing else! So what do you think? Is $6,000 a reasonable asking price for this rare wagon? And if you were to buy this Cadillac, what would you do with it?

This one looks familiar….
I was thinking the same thing. About a month or two back. I remember the bus seat interior.
Yeah, the one by the World Famous Customizer, Joe Shablotnick
Yep, I recall this one from a while back, tho I thought the asking price was much higher. For such a rare vehicle, the budget should have been bigger for the paint, & interior redo. $6K isn’t too bad, depending on how healthy the drive train is, and how much more rust is hiding.
Definitely not a 1972…and those appear to be seat covers.
Photo 8 on the ad. ..what happened to that door panel..it looks crushed.
I think that’s just the sunlight playing tricks on your view
Daniel you are correct. I pulled up the picture of the door panel and enlarged it. It is damaged. I give the seller credit for showing it though.
Cummins 6 cylinder with right side fender hole exhaust exit of course!
With more to me before slapping a Earl Schieb paint job and horrible upholstery.
Demo derby.
Repeat? https://barnfinds.com/a-long-story-1976-cadillac-fleetwood-castillan-wagon/
Good eye. The BF gremlins are about. Filler pieces on this car behind tail lights always rot..bad job replacing. Bus seat covers etc tell you whoever owned this went the low road so expect the problems to multiply. Did I say that last time?
That was 5 weeks ago Rusty.
It might cost more then it would be worth totally And I agree this car has been ousted at least one or two times before
Titanic tribute car, cool. The seller should translate that $6K asking price into a cost per pound or linear foot, then it would look like a screaming deal!
What, a dollar per pound?
Pretty much. My ’73 Sedan DeVille was a touch over 5,000. Add on the extra sheet metal and such, and…
Glen Campbell used to to pick up his kids from our school in on of these.
Probably Texas by way of Michigan by the looks of the rot.
I am looking for my gradma…
Last seen on top the griswald family truckster in route to Wally World on the top under tarps 😜
Agree the grandeur of the interior is lost with the bus cover front seats. Oddly their is a dash cover to contrast with it to indicate care is being taken to preserve the dash..
I think this car is being highly undervalued. I am not that fond of these gargantuan Cadillac bodies, but they due exude Cadillac style and the fact that this is a rare limited edition station wagon makes it highly desirable.
A big block V-8 with loads of torque must be a dream to drive.
I love the Cadillacs of this era, but this car just needs way too much. You’d have to find someone who loves these cars and has deep pockets, and price it much more reasonably, since there’s little demand for a Cadillac station wagon, regardless of how rare it is. Sometimes rare just means no one wanted it.
Back in 1990, I found a 77 Chrysler Cordoba Crown Coupe with a factory manual sunroof, and other rare options. It ran beautifully, but had a good amount of body rot. I thought it was worth money because it was rare. I had a hard time selling it because there was no demand. It’s only worth what your buyer is willing to pay. If it needs work, that buyer will want to pay less. If you want to let it lie around and rot away, it’ll only be worth less in future, not more.
I`’ve seen this Caddy for sale for so long and so many places.
And everybody bagged on the integration of the station wagon roof on the ‘69 Mustang. These things always seemed cheesy and contrived.
Looks like very serious water damage. $2500.00 at most.
Yeah It’s a 76 with the taxi cab seats
Elvis Presley had one of these, sort of. His is said to be one of one. It has the clamshell tailgate like most early 70s full sized GM wagons, not the hatchback. It is white with a pink roof. It can be found on YouTube.
I’ve never, ever, seen a Cadillac sedan of this same vintage rust in the rear fenders like this conversion. There must be some serious water damage from the way that top was grafted onto the rear. PASS! Oh, and taxicab upholstery for the seats? Who does that but a frugal owner trying to hard to save a buck?
Elvis Presley and Dean Martin both had Cadillac station wagons. I know the one Elvis had went through Mecum auctions a couple years ago. I don’t know the whereabouts of either vehicle today.
True, but at least Elvis’s was custom built, a one off. It had the clamshell tailgate, a la the big body GM wagons of the early 70s. The Castillion has a hatchback. You’re right, someone has it, and there’s a YouTube video about it, showing the operation of the tailgate. The car is white with a pink roof. Pink was his favorite color.
