Rare Diesel: 1976 International Harvester Scout II
This 1976 International Harvester Scout II is located in Redondo Beach, California. The SUV is a faded light blue and white on the exterior. The interior is green which makes one wonder if the exterior was repainted. But hey, this was the 1970’s and wild color contrasts were popular. The Scout II is listed here on Facebook Marketplace for $6,000. The listing has been active for about 2 weeks. What makes this Scout II unique is that it is equipped with a diesel inline 6 cylinder engine. The later turbocharged diesel engines used in 1979-1980 get a lot of attention but most people don’t know that International Harvester introduced an optional diesel engine in 1975.
This is a 3rd generation Scout known as the Scout II that International Harvester produced from 1971 to 1980. The first generation Scout was called the Scout 80 and was built from 1960 to 1965. The second generation, Scout 800, was manufactured from 1966 to 1971. This truck is not in running condition and will need the braking system, fuel system, coolant system, and probably the electrical system rebuilt.
International Harvester built its first generation of Scouts with a small 152 cubic inch inline four-cylinder engine. As the Scout improved in design, International Harvester introduced more powerful engines including a larger inline 4 cylinder, an inline 6 cylinder, a 266 cubic inch V8, a 304 cubic inch V8 engine, and a 345 cubic inch V8 engine. In 1975, International Harvester introduced its first inline diesel six-cylinder engine. The engine selected by International Harvester selected the Chrysler-Nissan CN6-33. These early engines were painted yellow and produced 89 horsepower.
Later in 1979 and 1980, International Harvester offered the Scout II equipped with a Nissan-built 198 cubic inch turbocharged diesel inline-six. This vehicle is going to need a lot of work. The seller states that all the parts needed to get it back on the road are included with the sale. This seems like a good starter project but it is going to take a lot of work to rebuild the engine and fix the cosmetic issues.

For the sake of clarity, it should be noted that this is a first-year Scout II Traveler, the long-wheelbase version of the Scout II intended as a replacement for the discontinued Travelall.
I remember every International of that time period having a green interior. My Scout II was lifeguard orange with yellow stripes and the interior was still green.
No information on rust status, body, undercarriage and chassis. State of interior.
