Rainbow Colors! 1970 Plymouth Duster
In the early 1970s, Chrysler offered “Hi-Impact” colors on some of its automobiles. Many were the wildest hues ever seen before or after on a car in those days. Perhaps the rarest of the bunch was the pink paint that Plymouth called Moulin Route (on Dodges it was Panther Pink, perhaps a niftier name). This 1970 Plymouth Duster is an original FM3 Moulin Rouge car, although it now sports a variety of other colors (resembling a rainbow) from repairs and patches. Located in a salvage yard in Logan, Utah, the multi-colored project is available here on eBay where the current bid is $5,500, the reserve is unmet, and the Pass-Go price is $10,000.
Plymouth introduced the Duster in 1970 as a sportier, sexier version of its boxy Valiant compact. From the cowl back, it had an all-new body and would become quite popular. Desirable enough for Dodge to lobby for its version of the Duster that they called Demon in 1971-72 and Dart Sport in 1973-76 (the latter due to supposedly religious section pressure). You could get your Duster with either a basic Slant Six engine or a 318 cubic inch V8. If you were particularly bold, there was the 275 hp Duster 340. The seller’s car has that pink paint which we understand is the least ordered of the Hi-Impact colors. But it’s a basic 318 automobile.
As the story goes, Moulin Rouge was only applied to Plymouths built in the Spring of 1970 and then it disappeared from the options list (RM3 was the official code). It’s probably the hardest color to find on a ’70 Plymouth today, regardless of the condition of the vehicle. The seller doesn’t know if this is a numbers-matching vehicle, and it looks to have been off the road for a long time.
There is some rust, particularly the surface variety in the trunk. And the inner fenders were cut at some point for headers. To rectify that matter, the seller is throwing in some nice inner fenders from another Mopar of the same style and vintage. Whether the car can be made to run without a major undertaking isn’t known. If you want to know about this pink project, check out the seller’s video here. Once you go pink, can you go back?

Had a 71 318 car in ” Curious Yellow”, that kind of mustard- yellow/ greenish color. That, too, was a rare color. The only Duster I ever saw like it.
THis is what Dusters looked like here in the northeast after just a few years in the salt. But then you get a look underneath this one and you know that it lived its life in a very dry climate.
This one has potential, especially with that rare paint color, but 10K to start will get you underwater about halfway through the project. Hopefully someone will take it on.
Forget the paint and buy the nice 75 yellow one on here now. Leave this right where it is at for 10k.
What happened to all the comments? New sheriff in town?
barnfinds had a server crash so things were weird for a couple days.
the car is rough but do-able.
i do think the buy it now is wishful thinking but in today’s market who knows
Yup, they are there and then many are filtered out. Welcome to the new world.
They weren’t filtered. We had to restore from a backup that was a day old so many of the comments were lost. Things are running better now.
What color do you put down on the registration?
