Ram Air III? 1969 Pontiac GTO 400 4-Speed
More than five years after its introduction, the Pontiac GTO was still a frontrunner in the mid-size muscle car market. However, sales were on the decline by 1969 as every competitor had their own version of the genre, so the space had been well-saturated by that point. This 1969 GTO is a project that may only need paint. It’s not numbers matching, but the important hardware is period correct. Located in Elyria, Ohio, this Poncho is listed here on eBay where $20,900.
GTO sales were still brisk in 1969 at more than 72,000 copies but far below the peak of nearly 97,000 in 1966. The VIN the seller provides decodes the car as having been born with the 350 hp version of the 400 cubic inch V8. The seller states that the “correct ram air was added years ago”. They don’t mention if the Ram Air specific cam and free-flowing exhaust headers were part of the conversion or if it just included the hood and air cleaner. If this vehicle had come from the factory with the Ram III and 4-speed manual, it would have been one of under 250 assembled!
This automobile is being listed on behalf of a friend, so we suspect that said friend is unable to finish what he/she started. Although most of the body sports grey primer, the paint that’s showing could be original and one of two shades of a dark blue that Pontiac offered in 1969. The unfinished work may be largely cosmetic as we’re told the Pontiac runs and drives great with a posi-traction rear end and Flowmaster exhaust.
The dark blue interior looks to be in pretty good shape and that Hurst 4-speed shifter is a welcome sight. The floors and trunk are claimed to be solid and, if any bodywork was needed before the primer, it may have already been done. If you’ve been looking for one of these hot GTOs to restore and don’t mind picking up where someone else left off, this might be a good one. Gas, Tires, and Oil, baby!

Too bad all the factory air components are gone… but an aftermarket system would be fine since this isn’t an original car. I love the Liberty Blue GTO’s, this appears to be a good start, but cars in primer can hide a tons of flaws. There aren’t any photo’s of the trim tag, and just not enough photo’s period.

With over 4 days left the bidding stands at $21,600 for a primered, non matching number car with no PHS report that clearly states Ram Air was added too.
FYI, as for the write up, there were 6,143 Ram Air III manual transmission coupes made, but only 249 manual trans Ram Air III convertibles. Which this car is neither.
