Rusty Roller: 1970 Dodge Charger

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

It’s amazing what a redesign can do. The Dodge Charger was not an immediate success, selling just 53,000 units in 1966 and 1967 combined. Then Chrysler redid their B-bodied intermediates in 1968 and they delivered nearly 225,000 copies of the Charger in the next three years. The market had also been heating up for performance-driven automobiles in the late 1960s, and that no doubt helped. This 1970 Charger was nothing out of the ordinary, but looks to have led a hard life as it has as much rust as it does sheet metal – and the drivetrain is long gone. What would you give for this roller? The bidding here on eBay is up to $3,600 and the seller hints at the reserve being set at around $11,000 at a dealer in Allen, Texas.

From what we can tell, this crusty old Dodge left the factory with one of Chrysler’s “Hi-Impact” colors, in this case, FY1 Top Banana. When this auto had an engine, it was the 2-barrel version of the 383 cubic-inch Magnum V8, then paired with a TorqueFlite automatic transmission. We’re guessing when this car started to fall apart, the drivetrain was still serviceable and was pulled to be used elsewhere. But that’s just a guess.

Some cars, even classics, can be too far gone to be saved and we wonder if that’s not the case with this Dodge. The fenders and hood don’t match the rest of the car, so they came along later. The bumpers front and rear are gone. The passenger side rear quarter panel is jagged with rust. Open the doors and trunk, and you see big gaping holes. What’s left of the white interior, like the back seat, will have to be redone. Bidders must have a restoration in mind as there’s not a lot good here to serve as a donor, especially at five figures. Unless the VIN has an appeal.

On the other hand, as a restoration, this car is an open book. There’s no need to worry about originality as anything that was numbers matching has flown the coop. So, as s roller, is this a project you would take on as a challenge or look for a more viable candidate to work with?

Prime candidate for the first March “you’ve got to be kidding” award. Junk at it’s finest.

If I gave the seller a hundred bucks for the car, they better hand me a six pack of beer along with the keys.

Still has a good gas cap, not sure it’s worth $11,000.
Might be good for yard art. Or fertilizer, even plants need their recommended daily dose of iron.

Good news! All you have to do is replace everything under the gas cap.

I ordered a brand new ’70 Charger as soon as I came home from Vietnam. Same color as this derelict. Lemon Twist. My friends used to yell out, “Taxi!!!”, whenever I came around. I paid $3260 cash, kept it 6 months, put 14,000 miles on it, and sold it for $2,000. I liked looking at it, but I didn’t like driving it. Kinda like the pretty blonde I used to date. I replaced it with a ’56 Chevy 2 dr. sedan which I drove for 23 years. I never looked back. BTW, what lake did they drag this out of? Jeez.

“Don’t lowball me, man, I know what I got”! lol

I’ve owned three 2nd gen Chargers since 1973. IMO these are the hottest muscle cars ever. (How many have been used/destroyed for TV/movies?)

The market has been crazy on these and it’s only getting hotter. Hence the rollers are up for sale. Even Graveyard Cars would have a hard time resurrecting this without a tetanus shot.

This one puts me in the mind of the ramblin wreck of Georgia Tech. Only that one was in better shape. Dealer evidently made a mistake in where he placed the decimal places. It should read $11.00.0!!!!

So, lift the gascap, drive a decent car under it and reattach gascap. But get a tetnus shot first.

The thing is… people are buying these, as rusty as they are. Maybe YOU wouldn’t buy it and I wouldn’t buy it – BUT – There are people who are buying them, for whatever reason, and quite frankly, if someone is buying, why not be the one selling?

If any one of you came across this in an old aunt’s barn, in this condition, you wouldn’t call the crusher, because you know people are, um, what’s the word I’m looking for?? Intellectually deficient – That’ll work. So, knowing someone out there with more cash than cranium contents would buy it, you’d sell it and laugh your way right to the Barn Find Classifieds to find something in much better condition, for much less money…LOL

I have a 70 charger rt that needs a lot of framework, and panels, but it actually runs, with a 383. The car came with a 440. If that car is worth 3,600$ to someone, then it would be interesting to see what a auction price my car would get. It has the electric factory sun roof.
