Silver Anniversary: 1990 Ford ASC McLaren Mustang LX

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

While we see more than our fair share of ASC McLaren Mustangs on these pages, the final year model is a rare bird among an already hard-to-find model. This 1990 example is most readily distinguished by its unusual Enkei directional wheels, which stand in stark contrast to the BBS-style wheels found on earlier models. It also sports the combination of silver over red leather, another distinct departure from the standard white and reds we often see over a gray or camel-colored leather interior. With under 10,000 original miles, this may also be one of the lowest mileage final year models out there. Find it here on Barn Find Classifieds for $35,000.

When it comes to the ASC models, I think we can all agree that these didn’t become instant collector’s items like many first owners were counting on. I suspect that’s why today you still so many pop up for sale with low mileage despite being a decidedly low-production car, just like the supposedly “rare” baseball card or comic book that every kid on the block kept in plastic. The final year edition, however, had a number of unique features that really did set it apart, and production numbers were even smaller than prior years, with purportedly just 65 cars built in its final year. I love that lipstick red leather interior.

The windshield was also moved back by a few degrees, resulting in a more raked appearance and requiring custom side glass in the finished model. The drivetrain, however, was very familiar, utilizing the standard 5.0L V8 that came in every Mustang GT. This may have been one of the limiting factors with the McLaren, as buying one represented a fairly steep price increase over a standard Mustang GT. But for that extra coin, you basically got a manually operated top with a power tonneau lid, backseat delete, and a raked windscreen. You had to place a value on exclusivity to make the purchase premium worth it, in my opinion.

Now, I always felt these were sharp cars. These later production models also got the better taillights, which featured a sort of half-smoke, half-clear look that was very tastefully executed. The seller reports his car is even more unique for being a Silver Anniversary edition with a unique 25th-anniversary package installed, making it one of just two such cars made. The Silver Pearl paint was supposedly unique to the Silver Anniversary model, and while 12 anniversary cars were scheduled to be built, the seller claims only his and one other car made it across the production line. The condition appears to be excellent, and it’s unlikely you’ll ever find another one quite like it.

    Great color choice
    Auto will lower demand
    Really rare car
I wonder what the price would be if this was a regular gt mustang with 4 seats and such low mileage?

Those wheels aren’t from a cougar, they are Enkie wheels that are part of the silver anniversary package.

Even if they are the original wheels or optional wheels , they simply do not enhance the car as they should , its missing something as its a beautiful car …
