For Short Hippies: 1966 Volkswagen Bus
Your eyes are not deceiving you. This VW bus was shortened by two feet before a band of paintbrush-toting hippies descended on it. The seller claims that this bus could have been at Woodstock. That may be speculation, but there’s no denying the fact that this thing is a trip back to the sixties – complete with strange hallucinations and all. The only thing crazier than the paint job is the current high bid here on eBay! The auction ends tonight.
The interior could be even more wild than the hand-painted exterior. There’s lots of colors and custom touches. I’d be a little nervous of what I might find in there though…
Checkout the roof mural! Someone had way too much time on their hands. I guess that’s what happens when you hang out and listen to music instead of getting a job.
It sounds like all the mechanicals have already been gone through so this bus should be ready for car shows, camping trips, or whatever the next hippie owner decides to do with it. I’d want to check out the rot in the rockers and the hack job before bidding though.
It’s fun to look at it, but what do you do with it? A few old hippies must have some big plans for it because the bidding is over $35k with time to spare! Apparently, not all those peace-loving guys and gals kept their anti-capitalism beliefs… Peace man!

I don’t get it. The mural inside speaks of early 2000s, and the Ron Jon Sticker in the back didn’t exist until the mid 90s following a redesign. I call shenanigans.
I agree. Some hustling young afficianado of Lawerence Welk is up to no good
“No nukes” is a late ’70s early ’80s thing, so consider this van a collection of stereotypes of about a 15 year period of time.
It could have been at Woodstock, and I could have been an astronaut and walked on the Moon.
It’s obviously a re-creation. What I don’t get is the obsession with shortening things that weren’t in need of shortening.
Shortening is better used in the crust for a gooseberry pie. The VW Kombi I paid $700 for and enjoyed as a 17-year-old would be a torture chamber for the 64-year-old me. It’s hard for me to believe that people are buying these things to actually use.
Uh yeah…needs an air filter on that carb. Or did they smoke that too?
No respectable hippy would ever drive that
I love how this thing is parked next to a Bentley GT3.
Yeah,Woodstock.and I could have been tall and handsome.😁
If that bus was at woodstock, it was “before” it’s current length and customization mods.
If you parked that thing in my neighborhood the city codes guy would be at your door tomorrow with a fine and a tow sticker and I don’t even live in a subdivision with a A$$ociation of henchmen.
Too hokey for words!
Hokey and pokey. A winning combination.
I believe the correct term here is “Tribute Van”.
Holy crap. It’s up to $35k for a shortened knock off hippie bus. We just sold this 65 for $25K. Maybe we should’ve had some kids paint some junk on the side for another 10 grand asking price SMH
No. Just no!
I just shot an independent film that involved hippies and created a bus for it by adding graphics and “patina”. Under it all, this bus has a nice burgundy and white paint job. When I sell it, will be about one seventh the price of this shorty.
Air filter is to right of the engine connected to the carb by a rubber boot/hose.
I cry foul on this one. There is just too much wrong with it to be an authentic “hippie bus”. Whoever put this together was really trying too hard. As has been pointed out much of what is on there is from too many different periods and it just doesn’t smell right. I was there in the 60’s in Berkeley and other parts of northern California and saw enough of these to spot a fake. For one thing why would hippies shorten it? Too much work, too much effort. We had better things to do. Besides it’s in Minnesota. Surfboards??? Hippies didn’t surf. Given the amount of rust it looks to me like someone started a project but discovered that there was too much work/rust to make it viable money-wise so just decided to cover it w/ hippie ‘stuff’ and foist if off on someone gullible enough to spend, Good God, over 35K for it?????!!!!!!! No! No! No!
While it may have been to Woodstock clearly it wasn’t in this configuration. So then it becomes a George Washington’s ax tail. Original ax owned by George Washington, the handle was replaced when broken and the ax head wore out due to re sharpening and later replaced too😊
Is it listed on eBay again? It shows sold at $35,100.00. On the original eBay listing. Now it seems to be listed again. Little fishy if ya ask me

A Re-Creation for sure that buyer just got riped of
Forget the bus. Someone please rescue that tortured Bentley Continental GT in the background of the first photo!
Stock wheelbase wasn’t tippy enough for these trippy hippies.
Back in the day, an undercover narcotics officer dressed in “hippie” garb once came into an apartment I shared with a few other fellows to buy some pot – he heard from some “friends” of ours that we might have some to sell. He didn’t fool me for a second. Same with this van.
Like they say, I might have been born at night, but it wasn’t last night.
The real test is, you must look in the seat crack’s for pot seed’s LOL !
