SCCA-Approved: 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302
The Ford Mustang Boss 302 joined the Chevy Camaro Z/28 in SCCA Trans Am racing in 1969 and 1970. With street versions available for sale, Boss 302 production worked out to just 8,253 units in two years. With a 302 V8, nearly one horse per cubic inch was doable out of these special engines. This 1970 Boss 302 has a period-correct engine and manual transmission, but they’re not original to the car. Rust will be a challenge for the buyer, but the rarity of these cars can result in hefty resale prices. Located in Floyd, Virginia, this ‘Stang is available here on eBay where $6,100 is the current bid, the reserve is unmet, but you can pass go and write a check for $28,500.
Also in production was the Boss 429, the “big brother” to the Boss 302. The latter’s engine was within the limits of Trans Am standards, which capped displacement in the SCCA series at 305 cubic inches. But the engine was nothing like the more pedestrian 302 V8 found in other Ford products. That included canted valves that would later be found in Ford’s 351 V8s. Besides the hot motor, the Boss 302 had a more aggressive aero and handling package. The Boss 302 and 429 names were coined in honor of Ford’s then-new president, “Bunkie” Knudson.
This Boss 302 is a project vehicle that has two dings going against it. The first is that the engine and transmission are not numbers-matching but correct for the 1970 model year. The second ding is the amount of rust that will have to be dealt with. It seems to be everywhere, specifically the gaping hole in the floorboards. But the torque boxes, rear quarter panels, and tail panel haven’t escaped its wrath, either. The correct front fenders seem to be fine.
We don’t see much of the interior, but we’re told the tachometer dashboard is present. The car’s front spoiler has survived but is not installed. The Shaker component in the hood is aftermarket and the seller says the engine runs though we don’t see much in the way of hoses hooked up in the photos. If you can get past the cosmetic issues of this Ford, it could be a cool Mustang once again.

Whoa!!! They can’t even put screws in to hold fender on under the hood cuz of rust. And where’s the radiator? This reminds me of Gilligan’s Island with the huge SOS on the white sandy beach. Only the seller’s here is on top of his shop. $28,500…..A fool & his $$$ r soon parted. 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

$28,500 seems mighty steep considering all of the rust issues. These sell for good money if numbers matching, which this one never will be. Even so, I hope a buyer and this seller can come to terms. Would love to see it restored.
Once again… you are wrong about the Bunkie part. Larry got the Boss name from the mid 60’s street lingo of the time. He said so in an interview we read a while ago.
