Super Clean: 1990 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350
When the second generation Firebird was introduced in 1970, a new model known as the Formula was added. By the time that 1971 rolled around, Pontiac offered three submodels of the Firebird Formula noted by the engine size they were equipped with. The Formula 350 had the Pontiac 350 cubic inch V8 engine. The Formula 400 had the Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 engine and the Formula 455 had the Pontiac 455 cubic inch V8 engine. After GM cancelled Pontiac engine production, only GM corporate engines were available which in 1990 included the Chevrolet based 350 cubic inch V8. Pontiac returned to its roots and built the Formula 350 in the 3rd generation Firebird with the 5.7 liter engine from 1987 to 1992. This particular car is located in Fountain Hills, Arizona outside of Phoenix. It is listed here on Craigslist for $17,500.
The car appears to be in excellent shape and has a reported 66k miles on the odometer. The grey interior looks clean and shows no obvious signs of wear. As stated, the car is optioned with the 5.7 liter GM 350 cubic inch V8 engine that was rated at 225 horsepower in 1990. The car has the G80 performance axle that includes aluminum brake calibers. The creature comforts include power windows, power door locks, air conditioning and rear hatch power release. The car also has the WS6 handling package.
Some minor modifications or improvements have been made including sub frame connectors that have been welded in place to stiffen the chassis, headers to free up the exhaust flow and new dual exhaust with catalytic converters and Flow Master mufflers. The rear wing has also been replaced with a fiberglass which is lighter and should hold up better to the elements. The car is said to run and drive nicely. The car still sports its original wheels.
I think this car looks sharp in white. The seller has several 3rd generation Firebirds and offers this one to thin the herd. The car comes with two sets of keys and the original window sticker. I would prefer a 5 speed manual transmission but I don’t think Pontiac offered that in 1990 with the 5.7 liter engine.

I always liked the Formulas. Just my personal preference. A buddy of mine bought a brand new black one. With a 350/auto. Man was that thing fast. Coming out of the malaise era these were very impressive compared to what was available in the late 70s early 80s. This one looks like its real clean and treated respectfully.
Nope, no manual was available with the 5.7. That said, there’s a lot to like here, the upgrades are worthwhile, and I’d rather have this than an IROC any day.
Very cool and rare bird. Love the Formula model. Nice article by the owner. Remember running neck and neck with one of these in a street race in my bone stock 89LX…
These Pontiacs move out well.
