Superbird Tribute: 1970 Plymouth Satellite
The Superbird was Plymouth’s attempt to have an aerodynamic winged entry into NASCAR. It was only built for one year (in 1970 with just 1,935 copies produced for public consumption). The seller’s car is a 1970 Satellite with a Superbird wing grafted onto the back and an upgraded engine under the hood, but otherwise, it may be stock. We’re told the wing is a real-deal Superbird appendage and will not be sold without the rest of the car. Thanks for the tip, TCOPPS!
Plymouth built about 45,000 Road Runners in 1970, so production numbers for the Superbird are scant by comparison. Today, these rare cars can fetch big bucks regardless of their condition. If you look at the seller’s automobile from the doors back, you might think it’s a real ‘Bird. However, it lacks the aero snout of the production Superbird by using the standard satellite front clip. Since the Satellite was an upper-tier version of the Belvedere, the interior is a grade higher, and this one appears to be original (green bench seat interior with yellow exterior paint).
The factory Superbird had a 440 V8 (4-barrel or 6-Pack) or a 426 Hemi. The seller says this Satellite’s engine was bored out to a 383, but its original displacement isn’t known, as the seller bought the car as you see it. It does have a 4-speed manual transmission, but we don’t know if it’s original to the Plymouth as so many Satellites came with an automatic. We’re told the car runs and drives well. It may only need a new bushing for the driver’s window.
The body and paint seem okay, but the seller is light on providing photos. The mileage is unknown, as the motor was tricked out before the seller acquired the weekend cruiser. If you want the wing for your own Superbird project, you’ll have to take the whole car as the seller isn’t parting anything. Awful looking. Fakes are bad enough, it’s worse when they are done poorly. For the asking price you can afford to buy something that you won’t be embarrass to be seen driving.

The seller says that they “believe the wing is real” so maybe it is or maybe it is not. The steering column is for a column shifted automatic.
A ridiculous attempt to turn what was probably a nice car into something it isn’t. Tributes take nice cars and ruin them. And the seller’s “trans” comment is offensive

IMHO, this tribute, done as poorly as it is, is important and desirable only to the builder. Out of the thousands (millions?) of enthusiasts/restorers, what are the odds someone would look at this and say, “Wow, that’s beautiful, I gotta have it!” I just don’t see it. Many years ago I converted a cargo van to a camper van. I took many vacations with it. A few years later I wanted to use it as a trade in on factory camper van. The salesman looked at me and said, “No one is looking for this at your price.” I decided to keep it and months later gave it to my brother-in-law who put many miles on it across many states. 7 yrs ago after trying to sell it, he asked if I wanted it back. I was too embarrassed to say yes.
Perhaps this is a first attempt for the seller?
If I were younger, I would contact the seller to see if I could get some of whatever he or she is taking. This is close to the craziest price that I have seen on barn finds. It is so nuts that I really can’t think of much else to say.
The price is really high, but I actually don’t think it looks that bad. Better than those black plastic wings they put on Dusters, and Darts that do absolutely nothing.
