Superbird Tribute? 1969 Plymouth Road Runner
Plymouth found instant success in 1968 when they launched the gimmicky Road Runner muscle car. The automobile would break sales expectations, especially in 1969 when more than 81,000 copies were delivered. This ’69 Road Runner has had the same owner for the past 50 years and has treated the car with kid gloves. It’s numbers matching, wears new paint, and has a rear wing that emulates the 1970 Superbird. The seller doesn’t seem to be anxious to sell the hot car which can be found in Mesa, Arizona. This ’69 Road Runner has only had two owners and the seller has been in possession since 1973. It was one of 13,206 fixed-post coupes to leave the factory with a 383 cubic inch V8 (335 hp) and an automatic transmission. We’re told it is numbers-matching and both the engine and tranny have been rebuilt, the former just 4,000 miles ago (the whole car has 113,000 but doesn’t look it). The vehicle comes with the Air Grabber hood sporting the “Coyote Duster” emblem on the cover.
The Banana Yellow paint has been redone and a Superbird-type wing added in the process. The seller says its specs are a little different from the ‘Bird’s and it’s securely attached and “looks better.” So, if he/she intended to create a Superbird tribute, I guess this one classifies. But that car was only built in 1970 with 1,935 copies using either a 440 V8 or a Hemi. The car has never had any rust, so the sheet metal is what the car left the factory with 54 years ago.
Besides adding Cragar wheels, the seller redid the interior using crushed velour. To me, this is an acquired taste, and I would have stayed with NOS materials and left off the wing. This incredible machine puts the “muscle” into the muscle car as there are no power accessories to help you manage it through corners and in stopping situations. The seller is reluctant to sell his/her pride and joy, so don’t think a cool trade or a lower offer will make the car yours.

One of the very few cars that I would happily own in yellow. I think the Superbird wing actually looks pretty good on this one, shame it has a slushbox. If it had a 4 speed the price wouldn’t be too far out of line. Love the Cragers as well. Everything about this car is “day 2” cool and I’d proudly drive it.

You should try riding in one of these with a reverse manual valvebody.A friend of my stepdad built one for his 70′ Road Runner.would shift from 1st to 2nd at about 50-60mph and would chirp the tires..who needs a third pedal to operate?
Craigslist ad says the trailer hitch has been in place since ’74!
I don’t think that wing is in any farther forward than the original. I think the base is not as thick/ wide and it’s playing tricks on the eye. The original started near the rear glass.
That wing needs to move back a few inches
I wonder is the wing just for looks or is it attached tom the frame rails. If the wing is not in the correct position it will hit the deck lid. I would like not to see the wing on the RR. There is a lot more then the wing to make it appeared to be a Daytona.

I believe the Superbird was only one year 70′ not 69′. Daytona was two years 69′-70′. That’s wy I called it a Daytona. MY BAD!!!!
No, Daytona was not 2 years. You will see ’70 Daytona tribute-type cars, sure, but not real ones.
Wonder if the trunk actually opens with wing being that far forward,and if you would put all this time and money into it wouldn’t you be sure of the wing measurements?

I have 69 RR coupe, post car. 383 auto on column didn’t release production was so low on post car with 383 and auto.

Mopar guys and wing car guys are a strange bunch (me included), he’s having a tough time selling it because it’s not anything, it’s a bad RR and an even worse Daytona or Superbird.
A friend of mine put a newer hemi into an original Superbird and although it’s an awesome car, nobody wants to spend 6 figures on a fake.
This guy will either drop the price to under 50k or never sell it.

I dig it, even the interior but that wing and the department store mirrors got to go. Imagine the fireworks from the static electricity when you slide across that upholstery.
The Charger Daytona was built in 1969 only, as was the original Charger 500 with it’s flush mounted 68 Coronet grill and flush mounted rear window. The Roadrunner Superbird was 1970 only. There were 1971 versions of both cars in the works until NASCAR outlawed them. Ahh, what could have been.

This car is too wrong for any real Mopar purist. We like our Chryslers finished correctly. But to the undiscerning buyer it might hit the buttons.

These are all good cars from days long gone. A fellow I knew back in this time got one as a high school graduation gift; 1969 RR, green with alligator skin top and an automatic. It made my ‘65 Mustang jealous.

Most of this car looks great . 2 things I would change , the interior is to plush looking for a 69 & remove the hitch. Merry Christmas everyone.
