Supercharged Garage Find: 1989 Honda CRX Si

Modern-day barn finds more often than not are in someone’s garage, not a rickety red barn. This 1989 Honda CRX Si is an unusual find, not only for being a modern vehicle that looks like any other dusty barn find, but because it also sports some very desirable modifications under the hood, including a Jackson Racing supercharger. The seller is light on the details but does reference how the gas in the tank is eleven years old and that the Honda hasn’t been used since 2010. This is the only exterior photo that’s available, so the true condition is hard to assess. The engine, however, sounds like a beast and is said to have less than 10,000 miles on it. Find the CRX here on eBay with bids to $5,500 and no reserve.

Jackson Racing was a household name back in the day, and an aftermarket company with a great reputation for binding high-quality products specifically for Hondas and Acuras. The company is still building high-performance kits these days, but I can remember ripping out pages from Sport Compact Car magazine for room art and inevitably a Jackson Racing advertisement would end up taped to the wall with some highly modified Honda or Acura product on it. Given the Honda was parked in 2010, this CRX was likely built during the peak hysteria period for the Fast and the Furious movie franchise, and if the builder spent this kind of money on the engine, you can bet there are other high-dollar modifications lurking.

The seller includes a photo of a sheet (picture below) that details the many modifications made to this CRX. Key among them is the mention that the engine was built by JG Engine Dynamics. Back in the day, JG was another household name like Jackson Racing, but was a much smaller outfit that seemingly ran into some hard times. The owner, a guy named Javier, was considered by many to be a godfather of sorts of the import drag racing scene. His engines are supposedly built to make incredible horsepower relative to their size, and he offered engine building services as well as standalone parts like performance camshafts. This engine is a D16A6 mill that apparently has only seen 5,000 miles of use, and the seller reports he has a CD with photos of the engine build in progress.

I really wish we could see photos of the rest of the CRX, as it sounds like a killer 90s build. The mention of it being lowered on Eibach springs with Momo Ferrari I wheels is what gets me most excited, as those wheels were the rage back in the day. I imagine they’re silver painted with black centers, which may not seem particularly exciting now, but it’s yet another aspect of import tuning culture that is captured on this forgotten high-performance CRX build. The original builder got the details right, too, opting to swap in front suspension from an Acura Integra with larger knuckles, calipers, rotors, and pads which should help to slow down this hot hatch rocket. I love period-correct builds, and hope this CRX comes back to life without too many alterations from its present form.

This car is a collectors dream find. The winning bidder will a happy owner indeed. I’m not big into the Asian car scene but a few models stand out and this is one of them.

Just 5 pics? That would be normal for a CL ad, but for e-bay, you need at least 10 more.

Great car, hooky intake hose setup. But I’d have it.
