Still Setting the Pace: 1989 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1989 Pontiac 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am is in pristine condition and was sent to us by K Cooper. It was listed for sale 4 days ago here on Facebook Marketplace for an asking price of $50,000. The seller bought the car from the original owner who was in Florida and has only put 60 miles on it. This car has only 10,650 miles on the odometer and is located in Churubusco, Indiana. The seller replaced the original wheels and tires but kept the originals for the new buyer.

The 1989 Trans Am Pace Car is powered by a Buick 3.8-liter V6 engine, incorporating the identical turbo dimensions found in the Buick Grand National and the intercooler sourced from the Buick GNX model. It is not the same engine as the GNX and is actually faster than a GNX. Notably, the cylinder heads are derived from the transverse 3800 V6, a design choice dictated by the constrained clearance within the engine bay. This powerplant, conservatively rated at 250 horsepower and 340 lb-ft of torque, was the fastest US production car in 1989. During its era, the 1989 Turbo Trans Am demonstrated remarkable quarter-mile performance, rivaling the times achieved by the Super Duty Trans Am in 1973 and 1974. Clocking in at 13.4 seconds for the quarter mile with a top speed of 153 mph, it boasted a 0-60 time of 4.6 seconds.

The tan leather interior of the vehicle appears to be impeccably maintained, resembling showroom condition. The control panel is equipped with tactile push buttons, reminiscent of the iconic Millennium Falcon dashboard from the Star Wars movies. The 1989 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am was designated as the Pace Car for the 1989 Indianapolis 500 with limited production run of 1,555 units.

The pictures of this car are all in the garage so it is hard to see the whole car. There are multiple pictures but they are just shots or the interior or different angles of the exterior. It is nice to see an original car that has been maintained but this one needs to be driven and enjoyed!

This is the only Trans Am that came with a V6. I would love to own one.
