Stored 30 Years: 1960 Porsche 356B Super

After hibernating for 30 years, this Porsche 356B is ready to stretch its legs yet again. A two owner car and relatively clean, we are intrigued by this 356. It almost looks as if you could clean this one up, check all the fluids, and make it a driver with a little time and elbow grease. Bidding is currently up to $24,300 and climbing. Find it here on eBay out of Fallbrook, California.

The engine and compartment are very clean and original. We love seeing the Bosch coil, and the lovely paint on the cooling fan housing and engine tins. This Porsche does not run, but the seller has stated that the engine does turn over. We imagine it wouldn’t take much to make this a runner again.

From what we can make out, the interior looks to be very nice. The steering wheel has a cover on it, so it may be hiding some issues. The carpeting looks mint, but perhaps it has been replaced in prior years, the seller did not indicate the mileage on this 356. The dash is clean and looks to be scratch free. The dash pad looks to have some minor waves in it but nothing serious. The seats looks nice, but there is not a direct shot of them to show their true condition. The Body looks rather solid. The most obvious rust on this Porsche is the bubbling at the bottom or both doors. The rockers looks solid from what we can see. There is also rust forming on both “A” pillars. You can see this rust in the photos with the doors open. We are concerned that there may be a moisture issue either with the front windshield seal, or from minor dirt collecting in the door seals when exposed to moisture. Aside from that, the rust looks to be minimal. The underbody looks solid and the floors look great.

These jelly bean Porsches have really gone up in value the past 10 years or so, and we imagine this Porsche will command a strong price. What do you think this 356B will sell for?

    Is this Axel Foley’s car?

You’ve got to be a certain age to understand the statement.

I don’t understand why someone would not try to get it running and double their money?

I grew up in Fallbrook, and was a local airport kid. My flight instructor had been a navigator with the Flying Tiger Line, a scheduled cargo airline started by one of the original Flying Tiger volunteer pilots (AVG) from the early days of WWII. He bought a Porsche 356 in Germany and had it shipped back on the company dime, and it was always stored in one of the hangars under the wing of a Cessna. I remember it said 1600 Super on the deck lid. When I first saw this I thought it was his. He died in a crash of his Pitts Special biplane in 1981 or so, his wife passed away a few years ago and I remember everyone speculating about the future of the pristine and completely original Porsche in the hangar. It was stored in perfect conditions in dry San Diego County and run several times a year. I don’t think this is his – it was gun metal grey, so maybe another Fallbrook barn find is out there.

Not sure why the concern over the steering wheel–I think it’s pretty common to wrap them for better grip. Plain plastic is pretty slippery in the twisties, after all. Ours had the same type of wrapper for over 45 years, and I finally bought Hubby a new leather wrap a couple of years ago for a Christmas gift (hey, he asked for one!).

Lovely car, I have a 912 project car (1968) with the same engine and learning lots about these early porsches. Hard to tell the extent of the rust without viewing, in some ways it looks like it might have had some restoration work at an earlier stage of its life – I think there is normally an engine valve clearance sticker on the engine cooling fan housing. Would love to have one of these classics.

Been improperly restored in the past.
Tin should be black except fan shroud if it’s a super.
    Black headliner not correct. Ect.
