Sweet Chalet: 1977 Chevy Blazer

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1977 Chevrolet Blazer Chalet is said to sport original paint on a mostly rust-free body. The Blazer features a small camper shell that incorporates the basics of living on the road, with sleeping quarters and basic kitchenette. The Blazer does run and has received some modest attention in the form of basic tune-up parts. Find it here on eBay with a $9,000 Buy-It-Now.

The seller has added the option to submit a best offer, which seems like a better way to get this Chalet conversion sold. The Blazer is in good condition, not exceptional, and its location in Wyoming (with snow in the ground in the background) begs the question as to how often it was used in winter. The rockers do look good, however, as do the leading edges of the doors.

The camper shell features a cooktop stove, sink, extra windows, sleeping / sitting areas, and a fridge. The roof pops up, providing greater headroom (but not an additional sleeping space like the VWs). The cabin can accommodate four but sleeps two, and the camper shell helps you forget this was ever a Blazer with a removable top. The camper features present nicely.

The standard-issue Chevy 350 provides go power, and the seller notes recent maintenance including plugs, wires, distributor, rotor, and a carburetor clean-up. The underhood area shows lots of surface rust, and without pictures of the corrosion disclosed in the listing, more photos will be needed to understand how rusty it is underneath – and whether it’s worth the $9K ask.

This would have been the talk of my neighborhood when it was new. There wasn’t too many makers supplying anything like it. I especially like the exit sign over the rear door. I can just imagine someone being in there wondering how to get out. So easy to get lost in there. LOL

I can’t believe that it was four years ago when I wrote about a similar 1976 GMC Jimmy Casa Grande for Truck Trend.

Many of them are the same color so it is easy to be confused…

Taking your accommodations on the road with you is nice, but a truck camper would be my last choice in that regard. Why? As the author stated, truck campers are basic…too basic for me. I’d want, at a minimum, a lavatory and a little more storage space. A travel trailer and an appropriate truck would be my preference.

The camper also seems to lack a means of support should one decide to remove it from the Blazer. Is one supposed to build one’s own stand for it? And if the camper is removed, the interior is way too exposed to the elements. I can appreciate this truck for its scarcity and decent condition, but its market seems limited.

Finally, totally irrelevant to the vehicle, the French bulldog that shows up in one of the photos is a cool little dog!

Does this make the blazer top heavy? I would wonder how it would affect the handling.

You are right Brian; it was featured on BF April 10th this year. Both write-ups mention its location Sheridan, Wyoming however in the first the engine is claimed to be the 400cid upgrade. Strange…

Yes, indeed, and I’d already forgotten about it myself. Link here, and in the last comment there, I note which one it is by serial number: https://barnfinds.com/overlanders-dream-1977-chevrolet-blazer-chalet/#comments Ignore the Wyoming snow in the current photos and speculation of how long it’s been in snow, the worry might be how long it’s been in the midwest US rain. I first saw this rig in Nebraska ads in 2008, and from that time to the present, it’s passed hands from one car dealer/flipper to the next, which is what the current seller is.

If that’s the exit, how do you get in? I wonder if there are lights on the floor leading to that exit.

Would this make a good Snowbird vehicle?
