I started reading the eBay listing for this Alfa Romeo before I looked at where the vehicle was located, but it didn’t take long to establish that the car is situated Down Under. The moment that I saw the word “boot” instead of the word trunk, that was a dead giveaway. The little Alfa has been sitting since the 1990s, but it is now up and running, and the owner is looking for someone to take it on and complete the process of returning it to the road. We’re talking about an unrestored Alfa Romeo from the 1960s here, so rust is a virtual certainty. There is a small amount of rust in the lower quarter panels, one rocker, and some in the trunk floor, but that is probably the worst of it. There is some “bog” (Bondo) in the right rear door with rust showing, and some in the front apron. The rust and “bog” in the front left door is significantly worse, and the owner feels that the door will need to be replaced. There is also some accident damage to the front left fender and bumper, but this looks like it could be repaired.

Before the car was taken off the road in the 1990s, the engine underwent a pretty comprehensive rebuild, including porting, polishing, and shot-peening the cylinder head. At the same time, the 5-speed manual transmission also underwent a rebuild. After sitting for so long, the owner has managed to breathe new life into the car, and he says that it sounds fantastic. There are a few things to be attended to, including replacing the rear muffler which he describes as “more holy than the Pope.” The front brakes are seized, but the owner is attempting to get these to release. The engine is currently fitted with Dellorto carburetors, but the original Solex units, along with rebuild kits, are included in the sale. The owner is also including a huge supply of spare parts, both new and used, with the car. These parts include body panels, trim, interior components, and mechanical items. All of these parts have been collated to help the new owner know what they have.

Australia is known as the sunburnt country, and while that sun is great for we humans, it is murder on car interior trim. A large proportion of the damage to the dash was inflicted by some individual helping themselves to the radio, while the rest of it can be placed squarely at the feet of both time and the sun. The seats will need new covers, although the damage to the dash is not a huge issue, as there is a replacement included in the sale. The door trim is missing off the driver’s door, but the others look to be in good condition. The car is still fitted with its original carpet, but this will need to be replaced.

Without wishing to stereotype, Australia has a strong and vibrant Italian population, and many of them hold a great deal of affection for anything wearing the Alfa badge. This passion is not solely confined to those of Italian ancestry, as this passion has rubbed off onto a significant sector of the general population. By the time this Alfa rolled off the ship in Australia, the country had developed a strong local car industry. High import tariffs placed cars like this one out of the reach of the majority of the population. Today, these older Alfas are becoming hard to find, and the real enthusiasts grab them eagerly. Spirited bidding on this Alfa has reached $2,575, but the reserve hasn’t been met. I don’t know what the reserve has been set at, but if I was a betting man, I’d be giving pretty good odds on this car selling.
